I read about Almased in Diabetic magazine...
I'm up to about 40units of Levemir a night and cant' get my numbers under control, with carbs with out carbs... they run from 145 to 253 all day...
Someone on this forum told me I wouldn't be able to control my numbers with Levemir alone... So what's next?
I go to my Diabetic Clinic next Wednesday...
Thanks for any input.

Never heard of Almased, and even now Googling, it sounds like its focus is weight loss. Talks a lot about lower insulin levels, but not much emphasis on blood sugars.

As for what's next . . . possibly bolus insulin?

I've seen the ads in Diabetes magazines but I wouln't count on it working. A lot of those things make claims about lowering bgs which are baseless. I don't see any metformin or other type 2 drug on your list. If you are insulin resistant you could benefit from metformin. Also many find their long acting insulin doesn't last 24 hours so they split it , one shot in the morning and one in the evening to get better control. Also I notice you take a statin and Niaspan. I think both may contribute to higher bgs. What type of diet are you using? Have you tried a really low carb diet like Dr Bernsteins Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. A Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars. Official Web Site

CrystalAnn, I have not heard of Almased, but the statin drug can make your bg's higher. I have a similar problem since I take Crestor. Also, I take 52 units of Levemir at night and have the same problem with numbers not being controlled well. I might try splitting the Levemir shot, but I also take a bolus insulin with meals. It does help, but I've also had some pretty bad hypos. I'm getting better with the bolus, but even still sometimes my numbers are higher than I feel they should be. It's is definitely a balancing act and you have to learn what works best for you. If you do not take metformin, I would perhaps broach the subject with your endo doc since it can help alleviate liver dumps and helps your liver to not produce so much glucose. It helps by making the beta cells more receptive as well to the insulin. I will have to do some research on the Almased. Good Luck. Share if you find out anything more on it. Thanks.

This Almased looks to be a "natural" supplement or diet to lose weight and control metabolism, more so than working to lower blood sugar. If you are overweight, it is supposedly good to lose weight to lower your blood sugars and triglycerides, but I don't think this product will do anymore for you than following a LC/HF diet, and green tea is a "wellness" tea in and of itself. I would not waste money on products that "claim" to lower your blood sugars. But, that's just me....

EEEK I tried it...

I had a sample and it tasted absolutely horrible...gag.
But I am up to 42 units of Levemir and my morning reading was 138, not under 110 but I'm getting there :p. I was told to up my Levemir by 2 units every 3 days...so we will see...

I am doing the same with the Levemir, but still having difficulty with the morning fasting number. Lowest I have gotten is 155, and not with any type of consistency. I've actually been more consistent with 180's to 200's :(
Do you eat anything before bed at night Crystal? As stupid as this sounds, I have gotten lower readings in the morning when I've eaten a forbidden food at night. Go figure.
Also, I tried to split my Levemir shot to two shots; one in AM and one at bedtime. That didn't work at all. I will go back to just the one shot at bedtime.

Yes I do have a sugar free cocoa using skim milk, which helps. But I also noticed by mistake that if I eat a large late lunch and no dinner, but just a snack and then my cocoa around 8:30 pm my morning #'s are lower. So much experimenting. Hopefully I will figure it out ;)
