Diagnosed 2 weeks ago, still trying to get blood sugar down under 8 on a regular basis with diet and metformin (2000mg/daily). When diagnosed it was 24. Is now around 8-10 and has stayed there the last 3 days.

A few complications, including BP and weight, thyroid, other auto immune disorders yada yada, but I'm also finding 2 major problems.

1) I'm on warfarin (thins the blood) which means testing my fingers makes them bruise, which makes testing more and more painful each day :( any ideas on how to lessen the pain?

2) my eyesight has changed dramatically since my blood glucose has gone down and it's scaring the hell out of me. It's not consistent, but its like my eyes cant refocus .. I wear reading glasses but after using them I cant focus long sight any more until I sleep. :confused:

Any advice appreciated.

Oh yes and I'm Aussie, living in Brisbane. 44y and female, married. Hubby is being very supportive. :D

Welcome. Your eye sight will stabilize after your BG stabilizes, I would advise not getting a new rx for glasses until that time. Test on the sides of your fingers not the pads, set the lancer to its lowest setting that gives you a blood drop. Tell us what your diet is like.

Well I've stopped all fizzy drinks and broke up with my cola addiction, eating nuts, salads, veges, fruit, but I do have wholegrain rice or bread sometimes, and potato in lil bits with a full meal. Should I be cutting all carbs until BG is lower?

Well I've stopped all fizzy drinks and broke up with my cola addiction, eating nuts, salads, veges, fruit, but I do have wholegrain rice or bread sometimes, and potato in lil bits with a full meal. Should I be cutting all carbs until BG is lower?
Cutting all the carbs for now would be adviseable. You can later reintroduce different foods later, testing as you go along to determine their effect on your BG level. Fruit is also not a good choice, unless you stick to berries only.

When I was DX I was told to wait at least three months. For my BG to stabilize before getting new glasses. My vision improved during the transition phase but it was only temporary. Two months in and my vision was back to my normal. That's coming from a BG of over 83 on your scale at that. So don't worry it will straighten out.
Cutting out the grains pasta and fruit is a good idea. But as you do remember to add in healthy fats to replace the energy your no longer getting.
Check out www.dietdoctor.com/lchf for some good info on what you should be eating. Also the diet and nutrition section of this forum has some good recipes if you get stuck for ideas for meals.

Its a mental hurdle. Keep in mind depending on your BG level, stabilty, meds you decide to take, you maybe able to reintroduce some carbs later after you gain control.

There is a good number of members on here that eat no grains, bread, potatoes, rice, pasta or fruit at all.

Not all carbs. Just those that spike him. Its pretty much a given that the "white carbs" rice pasta grains will. But the leafy greens like spinach bok choy lettuce broccoli and celery should be fine.

A very helpful site for all of us is Blood Sugar 101 and in particular, this section - How to Lower Your Blood Sugar

The name of the game for us all is to moderate the carbohydrate content of your diet. Unlike the medical profession the forum members know that we are all different. We don't therefore take the view that "one size fits all". So there is really only one way to see how far you need to change your diet.

Two things are needed. A blood glucose meter and a nice big notebook to use as a food log. Note the details of what is in your meal and then test your blood glucose. After your meal test again to see what impact that meal had on you.

Not all carbs are created equal. Some that I consider dangerous, you may have no issues with - and the reverse is also true. The mantra is "eat to your meter".

This idea is more fully explained in Blood Sugar 101 and the site is well worth exploring.
