My grandson was diagnosed with type 1 about a week ago and as you know it has been a big adjustment for the entire family. Tristan is barely 6 and has done great with sticks and shots. However, he is very whiny and cries a lot and gets mad very quickly. At the dr appt the other day when the dr was talking to him, he withdrew and would not talk much at all...when the dr left the room, his mom and dad scolded him for not being respectful told him he better straighten up. I truly felt like he was nervous and scared since this is so new. My question, would this diagnoses bring on any kind of behavior problems even while they are trying to regulate his insulin?...his sugar is still high and they said they expected that for a while...please help me to understand! Thanks to all..Nana27

Actually ... I am thinking he needs a school assessment. My daughter is proficient in that behavior ... turns out she has autism spectrum disorder.

Outside of the doctor's office, how is his behavior? Does he make friends easily? Is he oppositional toward teachers and parents? School psychs are great with this and he might get some needed supports in place.

My husband's second cousin is three years old and was diagnosed when he was two. He went through the same thing you're describing, even at age two. It did get better after a few months. Once he was better controlled, everything settled down. I am sure he's very nervous and very scared. I know that my husband's cousins (the parents) tried to comfort their son as much as possible, and included a lot more comforting and soothing. I also do realize there's an age difference between him and your grandson. As things get more stable, it will be more bearable. This is such an adjustment for kids.

He just completed kindergarten in May and did great....makes friends easily and is just a well rounded little boy. He Just finished up a season of T Ball and was a good team player and really enjoyed it! He is an only child but plays very often with 6 cousins and does great. He is probably the most cuddly and loving of all the 7, always taking time in the middle of play to say Nana, I love you!! I have raised three and I am big on respecting adults, but I wonder if he doesn't need a break!!

Before my 13 yr old son was diagnosed, he was very grumpy too. Always complaining and he wouldn't adhere to the school schedules. Right now his blood sugar is in check, he's less moody and very quick to laugh so wait til they get him stabilized, he'll be his former self. Also, this is all so overwhelming for us adults, imagine what he feels, with all them needles and pinpricks. I'd be very moody too!

Poor kid, I'd be grumpy too! i say give him a break, but at the same time his parents are probably scared themselves. I totally understand how they feel. They probably feel like the doctor is judging them as parents by their son's behaviour. So everyone needs support and love right now.

hugs to all!
