Hi, just wondering if anyone uses Byetta. My doc put me on it yesterday as amaryl and januvia were doing nothing except weight gain. I was 190 lb and with diet and exersise i'm now 214.
If after 30 days Byetta is not working then it's insulin.

I have no experience with Byetta either. Insulin works really well if that is the medication option that you and your doctor has decided on. Welcome to the forum and visit often! Good luck with your Byetta treatment.

I havn't had to loose a pound to get perfert scores on all my tests.
I told a couple relatives that are diabetics how I did it. And I blogged it once. No one seems interested. I don't count carbs or even check my glucose level very often anymore. I know its' stable.
The magic diet is simply complex carbs that are allso low on the gly semic scale. Lots of beans, alittle barley, lots of vegies, fruit, nuts, plain yogart(add fruit and nuts), and a little meat.
good luck

It's good that your control is so complete that you don't need the occasional test to monitor what is a proven progressive disorder. Tell us your most recent lab numbers, Dak.

I would dearly love to be able to eat beans day in and day out . . . they're cheap & good for us. But I must limit them severely to avoid spikes. A spoonful or two of black beans in my homemade burritos is about the most I can handle any given day, and I prob'ly better not push that to every day. I tolerate a few berries if I eat them with cream to offset the carb effect, but other fruits are also off limits for me. I know this because my meter tells me so! ;)

Sorry to hear that. I guess we're not all the same.
My A1C was 4, good cholesteral high, bad was low. My blood presure was back to normal and only take 2.5 of linisprel for that because the doc said it was helpful.
I go a whole day checking my sugar and it's always stable and not out of range. I didn't acheive this untill I started like I said "eating only complex carbs that are also low on the glysemic scale.

If your A1c is only 4, then you have an average blood sugar of 65. What is your target range?

I took lisinopril too, until I started "the cough", and then doc switched me to atenolol, which works well for me too.

My lab numbers are right here in my signature.

I know this will cause me grief; but I'll be honest. My last dr. visit was in the fall of 09. He hasn't given me any specific instructions. Except to eat protien in combination with anything sweet. And to ask if I wanted a referal to a dietition. Can't forget this one "lose wieght". Which I havent'.
June 1st I cut my metformin in half. Reason: Constant musle (I can't spell sorry) cramping, a heavy tired feeling, and mt sugar tests being in the low range of normal.
The cramping I suffered for months is gone. I feel more alert.
I checked my sugar through out a day and a half and they were still all under 170.
I'm going to do anouther round of tests tomarrow. I don't have a home computer or email alert at work. Don't feel slighted if my responses are sluggesh
Nice to hear from you.

I didn't have to lose weight, i was 190 lb at 6 ft 5in but amaryl packed weight on. So now i consider myself overweight. I'm very interested in reports of byetta causing a weight loss due to it closing the valve to the stomach so you think you're full. Sort of a chemical lap band i guess. I have only been on it a few days now and notice i'm eating much less because i'm not hungry.

A question on complex carbs you mentioned. From what i read potatos and pasta are complex carbs (bit i could be wrong). If i were to have either i'd be off the scale, worse than ice cream, and if i had a blood reading of 60 i'd be either very happy or laying on the floor passed out.

I only eat beans, a little barley, vegies that are low on the glysemic scale and are also complex carbs. Likewise with fruits. No rice at all. Even brown rice. One site says it has a high glysemic value and anouther says the opposite. I know it makes me feel bad. I also eat some cheese. And sugar free chocolate at 8$ a pound. The beans are almost free so it balences out. =) Potatoes, yams, watermellon are all no nos. Whole grain pasta I'll eat only sparingly. The same goes for any wheat products. And proccessed meats are bad too.
Nice to hear from you. Deb

I forgot to mention nuts. Mostly almonds. I put them in my plain yougart along with fresh or frozen fruit. Useing beans as the base of my diet along with the nuts and reduced meat intake is probly why my good cholesteral is high and the bad one is low.
I read that a docter in the N.W. said the lap band surgery and or the stomach stapling made diabetes vanish once the surgery was complete.
7 months or so ago I asked my docter about reducing my meds because my A1C was 4. He made a noise and said not yet. So June 1st; sick of feeling so tired, and the constant muscle cramping; I cut the metforman in half. So far so good.

Does anyone have any new info since this was posted? If my current combo (januvia/glumetra) doesn't do the trick, this might be the next step. Hoping to get some insight...

Thanks!

it seems to be working for me, lost 10 lb in just over a week and feeling good about it. B/S is also under control.
I found out you have to wait the full 60 mins after the injection before you eat. Initially i had some tummy problems but that seems to have gone away. I still take metformin 1000 x 2 per day

Thanks Rod, I appreciate it. How are you finding the injections? I also get stomach problems, but that's usually from the metformin.
I go back to the doc on Friday morning. I'll expect her to want to make a change as the oral meds have only worked a little bit. We'll see.

Injections aren't a problem. It comes in a 5 or 10 mcg pen. I take the 5 for now and that might be enough, although after lunch numbers are more than i would like, 170.
Good luck with yours and let me know if he puts you on it or you get something else

Good news...shortly after that post, I finally started reacting to the full dose of met/januvia. Fasting numbers are in a nose dive now and starting to feel better. We are going to stay the course on these meds for now. Only issue is my daily stomach adventure from the met. Wish I knew a way to counter that side effect.

I don't think that there is any way to get around the gastro side effects of Metformin. Some can take it with no problem and others get the gastro side effects. I would really love to be able to take Metformin but it just made me so sick. I had read that taking it with food can help. This didn't help me. :(

The last two days I've been taking Acidopholis with the met in the mornings and night and have had some improvement. Still a bit gassy but nothing terrible. I'll let you know if this works long term.

Thanks. Let me know, I would like to be on Metformin minus the gastro side effects. :)

My GI symptoms from Metformin eventually pretty much went away after I had taken for it awhile. Some people have better luck wit the extended release form of it. I rarely have issues with metformin anymore....unless I eat a *really* fatty meal...then it flares up briefly.
