Canadian Diabetes Forums

Does anyone know of a Canadian diabetes forum? I haven't been able to find one. I'd like to connect with folks and find out what their experiences have been with the Canadian medical system.

You do not need insurance for medical visits or necessary procedures. You need a reference from a GP to visit a specialists. No charge for a vitrectomy.

Drugs are a different story. Governments don't cover them at all, so you will need to pay for all the drops they prescribe for recovery.

That's true unless you have a very small income. Then most drugs are free. You can have assets (even money in the bank) but not more than about $ 24,000 a year for a couple.

If your income is higher (not sure of the details), you will get part of your drugs paid. Also don't have to pay medical premiums in the provinces that charge them.

Pretty good deal, if you ask me.

Just in case anyone need a new meter, or an extra one. The CDA is still running their free kit program.

I applied because I wanted a second, smaller meter to carry in my purse. If you qualify, they send you a One Touch UltraMini, 300 testing strips and 300 lancets. It's great and very helpful for those who struggle with the expensive of some of this stuff.

It took about a week and a half for them to qualify me (it's a simply questionairre). They called and let me know and verified my address. And it took about 3 weeks to get the package, but keep in mine this was at the beginning of the postal strike.

Sorry I can't post the link, I'm too new to the boards. But you'll find it under Diabetes and You I believe
