My doc recommended I read "insulin resistance" and "flat belly diet" books, however from what I read so far, we are supposed to balance carbs with protein but that seems harder than just staying away from them all together....what do you guys think?

For me the only "balance" that works and keeps my BG down is less than 15 carbs. 18 carbs and a pound of protein and I will still spike over 30 points.

What I think is the same as you, Tracie - it's easier and every bit as healthy to stay away from them altogether. I have no clue about what "flat belly" diets are, but I know we aren't in this to gain flat bellies - our lives depend on gaining control of our blood sugars, and this "balancing carbs" business rarely gets us the best control.

I have the Flat Belly Diet Book. It is too many carbs for me, but it does recomend fat at every meal. I find as a diabetic the extra fat helps my bgs to stay low. I think the balance needs to be a few carbs(10-20), some protein
(15-20 g) and significant fat 20 or more per meal.

If your doctor is recommending the flat belly diet, I assume he wants you to lose weight. Since my husband was diagnosed about a month ago with Type2, I have been eating less carbs than I normally would, although not nearly as low carb as him, and I have lost 11 pounds and he has lost 10, and neither of us was even trying to lose weight.

We aren't balancing carbs with protein and fat, just cutting out all the bad carb foods.

@raindance.........what bad carbs are you guys cutting out?......is it the whites and sweets?

The only "good" carbs for diabetics are those from veggies... (and for some of us, certain lower-GI fruits). Most veggies are fine with the exception of corn, potatoes and parsnips that are just way too starchy for our diets and should be excluded.

There are some very rare diabetics that can eat potato or corn, but they're the exception...

Most of us need to avoid cereals, grains, flour, rice, etc. etc., again with some exceptions (for example, I can eat 1 piece of sprouted-grain bread, containing 12g of carb, with very little spike if part of a high-protein/fat sandwich).

I shouldn't have said bad carb foods, I should have said high carb foods. My husband is trying to stick with 30 net carbs per day. That isn't much, so we have cut out pasta, potatoes, beans, corn, corn products, rice, flour, fruit, etc. If a serving has more than 5 net carbs, we pretty much don't eat it.

We eat eggs, real mayo, real cheese and butter and cook with pure olive oil.

We use Healthy Life bread with 5 net per slice from Walmart. Walden Farms makes no calorie, no carb products. The BBQ sauce is good and so is the apricot spread. I bought some other products but haven't tried them yet. But stay away from their bacon dip (at least in our opinion). We buy Thick-It-Up to thicken stews, sauces and gravies. They have lots of good products online at Netrition.

We eat meat, unbreaded fish and poultry and lots of veggies. You can even bread and fry the fish and poultry if you use certain types of low carb flour. There are recipes at this site where you can find faux rice, faux potato salad and faux mashed potatoes, all made with cauliflower, and they taste great.

Diabetic person should not contain high quantity of carbohydrate as glucose is released from carbohydrate and it raises the level of blood sugar level. Avoid taking fast food and bakery products. Four to five serving of fresh fruit and vegetables are beneficial.

All I do is vegan diet plus Lantus 84 plus Novolog 0-40 and I DON'T count carbs.
