hi everyone......

this disease came rather as a surprise to me, I was not prepared to encounter this. jst a few months to my marriage and i was admitted to hospital with pneumonia. The medicines were not responding so I had to unergo a bronchoscopy where i was diagnosed with tuberclosis. My sugar levels were high and I came to know in the hospital that it was not the end of my odyessey and I was found to be a diabetic as well. Since than i am on insulin at a very young age of 26 yrs. I don't know what to do and whether ever i will be able to discontinue taking insulin. For me this disease & home enviorement is completely new, at times i feel guilty that why am i a diabetic, I jst hope this does not affects my family life, for females it's even more difficult and challenging to deal with such a situation...

Hello Mona, welcome to Diabetes Forum! I am assuming you are Type 1 and your pancreas has stopped producing insulin because of your pneumonia and tuberclosis. If you are Type 1 then you will always have to use insuin to live. A damaged pancreas will not repaie itself. In 1945 when I was 5, I had measles, chickenpox and mumps. Thoses diseases all attacked my body in a few month's time. That caused my Type 1. I have now been diabetic for 63 years and I am very healthy. With good control we have a very good chance of living long, healthy lives. Ask all the questions you want, we are here to help!

knowing about diabetes

Hello Richard,

How do one come to know about whether one has type I or type II diabetes?I am on insulin for last four months now and the doctor here have assured me that once my tuberclosis is cured they will put me on pills rather than continuing with insulin, since my insulin requirement is not too high. Is it possible to control the sugar levels through pills, I have also heard that exercise can restart the functioning of the pancreas.I do not want to be dependent on insulin.
Anyways your reply to my thread was really encouraged me to fight back this disease and also I came to know through this forum that I am not the only one to be a victim of this disease.

Mona

Mona, there are approximately 24 million diabetics in the USA. About 22 million of them are Type 2 and 2 million are Type 1. A Type 1 diabetic has a pancreas that has stopped producing insulin so they must inject insulin to live. A Type 2 diabetic still produces insulin but the body is not able to use the insulin properly (insulin resistance) so various treatments are used to compensate for this. Some Type 2 diabetics can eat a low carb diet and exercise daily and cpntrol their Type 2 diabetes in that way. If that does not wor then meducine is prescribed to enable the body to use the insulin it produces more effectively. If medications also fails then insulin injections become necessary.

Since your body is producing insulin then you are Type 2. that is why your doctor said you will use pills. To avoid having to inject insulin in the future you should eat a healthy low carb diet. exercise every day and maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight can actually cause Type 2 so having an ideal weight is very important!

Hi Mona,

welcome here!

I'm feeling for you that you got diabetes, as all of us here. It's no pleasure to get diagnosed, but as Richard mentioned before: you can grow old (Richard, I'm not calling you OLD!!) and live a very good and healthy life.

I know my diabetes made me live healthier and more aware. I'm not happy I got it, but I'm still a happy person.

If your body requires insulin, that's what you should give it. Don't deny the condition, it is there and it needs proper treatment.

I wish you all the best Mona. Richard has given you quite some good advise already. And believe me..he knows...
