Hello,

I'm epileptic with diabetes and always worried of drug interactions, I don't want to trigger a seizure even though I'm well controlled.

For seizures I'm on

Epival
Keppra

I'm on Metformin 2000 mg but the Dr wants to add an SGLT2 inhibitor OR Ozempic injectable.

BTW the reason for this is my last A1C was 7.5 and my sugars are out of wack, I recently saw 14 after meal, although this was a one off test, I'm finding them more between 8 and 11 after meals -2 hours.

Thanks in advance

Hi, db101!

Have you considered altering your diet and not just your medications? I see that, last April when you were starting on this forum, you were trying to mind your carb intake, to less than 50 grams a day. How has that been working for you? Have you tried to go lower? Are your blood glucose readings fairly consistent or are you still kind of all over the map?

I'm just thinking that it might be possible to tweak your eating plan easier than trying to tweak medications.

Hi,
Epilepsy is a real big hill to climb, and I sympathize with your plight. I think that it will magnify your dilemma, concerning diabetes. And I don't have an answer for you, on that: but, I will say, fight to live and never give up.

That is the way that I do things, and it helps me to conquer my many ailments. I have a ton of things going haywire, and it is an uphill climb for me.

Thanks for the comments

Epilepsy just plain sux, been suffering with it since my teens.
For a period back then I was having issues monthly, now 40 years later I'm better controlled going years between episodes and want to remain on track.

I'm not doing low carb per se, I rarely if ever eat bread, pasta, potatoes or grains etc but I will snack on a small amount of fruit or peanuts etc.

Another question I had was the pros and cons of the SGLT2 inhibitors vs the Ozempic? Will the Ozempic cause my pancreas to burn out prematurely vs SGLT2 inhibitors?

Thanks

There is a summary of diabetic drugs here that includes SGLT-2 inhibitors and GLP-1 agonists. There are links to more info about the classes of drugs at the bottom of the page. Ozempic is a newer GLP-1 but should have about the same effects/drawbacks as the others. You can read about it here.

I wouldn't be so worried about beta cell burnout as I would about the other potential things that could happen.
