Just need to vent a little because this keeps happening and it’s bugging me. Hope that’s okay!

So I work in a car dealership in service (I book service appointments) and my coworker seems to always be on my case about everything and anything I do that could pertain to my diabetes.

Like I could have a snack and bolus for it, but if she sees it’s something sweet like chocolate or a donut or something she’ll be like “you’re diabetic you’re not supposed to eat that”

Just this morning we were talking about the medical benefits we get through work and I explained how between my Omnipod and Dexcom it costs a lot of money which is why I really don’t have a choice but to opt for the insurance because I can’t afford $600+ per month out of pocket for just the supplies. She then has the audacity to tell me that there are cheaper treatment options and that I should just do that instead. I tried explaining to her that going to a cheaper option (like injections) wouldn’t work for me because i can’t manage my diabetes well on the injections and that it really does depend on the person and she just looked at me like I was stupid and didn’t know what I was talking about (I’ve been managing this bs condition for 17 years I think I know what I’m talking about! )

Like I know it’s not really a big deal, but it is super annoying! Like it’s my condition and I know how to take care of it. I just wish people who really don’t know anything about type 1 diabetes would just stop trying to tell me what I’m doing “wrong”

It's always challenging when people without enough information think they know it all. Who knows if your coworker even knows the difference between T1 and T2?

My usual response to conversations like that one is to say that we're all different and that this is what works for my body. I leave it at that. Even if you had the cake and didn't bolus, does coworker know you low-carbed the rest of the day? Or that it's one birthday and you're going to enjoy it and follow the plan for many more days to come?

Feel free to rant here! We've all been there and commiserate with you.

Honestly I’ve always been the type to try to educate folks when they say something ignorant and most of the time people appreciate the free lesson and newfound understanding they receive, but with this particular coworker there just seems to be no willingness to be educated or understand the reality of living with diabetes. So I’ve just kind of given up justifying it or explaining myself to her at this point. It’s just mildly annoying that she feels the need to lecture me about things I clearly understand more than she does.

But I do appreciate that folks in this forum seem to understand what I’m dealing with so that helps. Really solidified the fact that I’m not alone in this

I detest the diabetes police! Everyone has an opinion that they want to share to "fix us." I've had a friend ask if losing weight would make it go away. She's also the person that brought me oatmeal cookies because they were healthy for diabetics. Or those people (also diabetics) who said, "eat what you want and take more meds." As a T2 on oral meds 💊that doesn't work for me and who wants more meds than they have to have?
Looking at this post it looks as if I have more tempters than cautioners. Both are annoying!

That one right there.

I appreciate that these folks mean well. Their hearts are in the right place. But, yes, people have this weird idea around carbohydrates and sugar. "It's okay; I made it with applesauce instead of sugar." "I used brown rice instead of white rice so you can eat it."

I will grant that my diabetes calls me to have a particular interest in nutrition that most people don't. But what people know about what they're eating is dismaying.

Oh I love the diabetes police.

I politely ask them when they were diagnosed. When they answer they don’t have diabetes, I say “Exactly, so you have no idea what it’s like and how different it is for everybody that has it. Please keep your comments to yourself”.

If they continue after being politely asked, now it’s harassment and I’d go have a chat with HR.

I believe in telling the other side of the tale also. Yesterday was annual meeting at church. The theme was pastries. I figured I could skip the goodies and not feel too deprived. However, one lovely lady made Pizza Chaffles! She made them for a couple of ladies that are gluten free. They were great! Unlike another lady who told me she brought grapes so I could be included.

You gotta wonder what dinners are like at her house.

Good for the lady who made chaffles! We frequently end up attending potluck events. I always bring something keto (even if it's just that sleeve of cut-up cheese slices they sell at the supermarket). Doing that guarantees I have at least one item I can eat. But I've been surprised at how many people home in on the item I bring because they know it's not going to be some carb-laden mess. It's also typically gluten-free, which the endless table of cookies/cakes/bars/etc. definitely is not.

You are putting yourself into this position by discussing it with her. Next time SHE brings it up, ask her how much training she has received regarding persons with no pancreas. Interrupt her if she goes off on some tangent and repeat. Remind her that no pancreas is very different from insulin resistance. Then move on and refuse to discuss the issue. You are not going to educate those who are determined to lord it over you.

Damn, the diabetes police and the tempters are such pests!! I have one tempter who makes sure theres plenty of sugar and carbs on the table when I visit. Scones, lamingtons, cakes of various kinds that she made “especially for you”… And laughs when I say no. and gets pushy and offended at the same time. I’d like to cut her off but there are times I realise that I have so few friends, I even need this. I succumb sometimes and on those occasions I let her know what my BG is, later, and how much insulin I needed to bring it down.

Sadly, she is an enabler. She is the same with her husband who has an alcohol problem. Plies him with booze and is then surprised and upset when the inevitable fight ensues. I give up.

Sue, your friend has some stuff going on if she's doing that.

But, gotta say, I'd never heard of lamingtons before so I looked them up and I'd give a slice a try. Maybe I should do a Web search for "keto lamington recipe".

[ETA] Dang.
