The date is set.. October 30th is going to change my life. A very good specialist is going to perform a Gastric Bypass, to help me lose weight and to get better control over my diabetes. I hope you will support me and pray for me.

I know there are other options, but after a 7 years struggle and more and more overweight, I have decided it's been enough. It is so exhausting and depressing that my efforts don't give any results. That's why I decided on the GB.

Has any of you done the same?

I think I need to place an update here. My endocrinologist is not willing to give his agreement on the gastric bypass. The operation has thus been delayed... I'm seeing other endocrinologists now, to hear other opinions on the surgery for type 1 diabetics. My surgeon and a Dutch endocrinologist are really helping me out, to find the best solution for me. They will not endanger me, they are really concerned about my health and they are trying to get as much information as they can get.

So I'm still looking for testimonies of T1 diabetics who have undergone a gastric bypass....

Hi, I am a 27 year old type 1 diabetic who had a gastric bypass 7 weeks ago. I was actually searching online for someone else who had done it when I found your thread. I would be happy to talk to you about it if you'd like! It's still new to me though :)

Hi Erin,

thank you so much for responding to my thread. I would love to know how you are doing and how surgery was. If you'd rather contact me via mail, feel free to do so.

Can you tell me why you have decided to have the surgery done? What was your BMI? Did you have difficulties to find a doctor who wanted to perform this surgery? Did it go well? How do your BG react? Do you have a pump or do you use syringes? .. I have so many things to ask. But most of all: are you ok?

Hi there!
I now have my surgery date, 08/02/2010 this is for 'Gastric bypass'. I am a type1 diabetic and have been for 31yrs now so a lot of things are old hat to me now.
I know that this surgery will drastically change my life and I would really like to hear from ANYONE out there that has or is going through similar.
I would really appreciate hearing how life really is after surgery.
Thanks
Shell

Hi there!
Thank you very much for responding to my message. i hope you are not feeling so sore now? GB? is that for Gastric BYPASS or BAND?
It sounds as though it has been worthwhile for you, especially the amount of meds you were on and the reduction.
As I previously put that my Gastric Bypass surgery was on 8th February 2010 and it has been quite a journey so far, I was re-addmitted back into hospital as I was suffering from some complications but, they seem resolved now (thank god).
I have now lost nearly 3 stone and I am feeling alot better for it, as I was suffering from various body pain that has all improved. My insulin dosages are also reduced which is a great thing. My diabetes control was very good before the surgery though as due to having an MI 5 years ago and now suffering with Angina I've had to keep my blood glucose levels running well.
Again thank you for messaging me and get back in touch and let me know how you are doing now.
With kind regards
Shell

I had my surgery!

Hi to all of you!

I had my surgery July 8 and everything is going so well! No problems so far. My basal insulin has dropped from 85 units a day to 41 at the moment. My total dosage was 135 units and is now around 50. I feel great! My average BG is now 118. It was 187 before the operation.

From day 3, I could eat 6 times a day: crackers with cheese spread or jelly, yogurt, pudding, and one hot meal a day (fish, mashed potatoes and veggies). No sickness, no nauseau, no nothing. My food tastes great and I'm not hungry at all.

I stayed in hospital for 7 days. I had staples in my tummy and they were removed yesterday. The wounds are healing well. I haven't been sore at all. Of course, I can feel I have had surgery, but it's not like I need pain relief.

So far it's been a great experience. I'm sorry it was the only option for me, because it's still very drastic.

Since I had the surgery, I have lost 4 kg (1 week).

Hi Cathy, I know I responded in the other forum, but I want to repeat my congratulations. This is fantastic! You are the first type 1 I have known to have a gastric bypass. You were very brave, and now you have wonderful results. I wonder if your appetite will ever return. If you continually eat like a rabbit you may eventually be underweight! You may grow long ears! Lol! Just kidding. I know you would not let that happen. I wish you the very best in the months ahead!

Richard
