Lia, you are correct in in much of what you stated. A small quantity of calcium is necessary to make Vitamin D more effective and fully functional, but not excessive amounts of calcium.

Please read this by Dr. Miller The Heart Scan Blog: The folly of an RDA for vitamin D . This may further answer some of what you wrote.

Found the article about a problem with too much calcium. This would seem to be really serious to me because diabetics have a high rate of kidney failure to begin with.

It only applies to people taking more than the recommended doses of calcium.

Calcium Supplements Can Increase Risk of Kidney Failure

There is a tendency to think that more of a good thing has to be better. Turns out that's not true with calcium.
