Hi

Have bought some Psyllium husk as i noticed a few recipes that included Psyllium husk for pizza crusts etc and a friend mine makes it using this and it for his pizza base and it was good.

Looking at Fitday it says 4 Tbls of Psyllium husk contain 12.4g of Crabs

But when searching the internet i have read places where they have said the the Carbs from Psyllium husk don't count something to do with digestable Carbs and not digestable Carbs.

here is a example of what i read.

in my country psyllium HUSKS have zero digestible carbohydrates. psyllium itself has some carbs, they said, but if you use only the husks, there are no carbs at all. they said.

whereas many in the forum seem to consider flax seeds as completley carb free. in austria it has 6 g carbs per 100 g, which is written on the label of packed pure flax seed and that is not so exremely low in carbs.

is it possible that different countries believe in different carb percentages of the same food?

So some are saying they do count as Carbs others are saying they don't so i am just wondering if anyone here knows if they really do count or not?

Much Appreciated

Carbohydrates in food are labeled differently in different countries. In the U.S., if you looked at a label for psyllium husks, you'd that a 12g serving has 10g of carbs, of which 9g are dietary fiber (or something similar). Dietary fiber is indigestible, so it shouldn't have any affect whatsoever on your bg. Counting the dietary fiber in your daily carb totals makes as much sense as swallowing a matchstick and counting that. BUT, that's the theory. In practice, this may be one of those YMMV things.

As WV Mom says, it's different in different countries. If you bought your psyllium husk locally, its label will conform to Australian standards, so just use the total carbs in grams for 100gm and per serving (whatever gm) on the label. :)

We seem to have covered the part about different countries having different labeling regulations, but if you make the recipe, eat it, and it doesn't spike you, then the carb content is pretty much academic, right? I could eat half a ton of Optimists Crackers, and I won't spike. I might founder, but I won't spike! :D

If I hadn't thrown out the bag mine came in, I'd post what its label said.

We all do different carb levels and get different results. The general feeling is that carbs from fiber don't enter the bloodstream, so they can't spike your bgs. But that may vary with different people, so that is why we test. In general the carbs from Flaxseed, oat fiber and the almond meal don't bother my bgs at all. In fact many of them will bring my bgs down if they are high. Some authors like Bernstein tell you to subtract 1/2 of the carbs that are fiber. But ultimately it is your bg meter that will tell you.

Be careful with that stuff. Gave me spikes AND horrible gas. I still have a bottle of the capsules. YUCK.

I am fed up with frankenfiber. FOREVER. Between that psyllium stuff and inulin / chicory ...

My can of Yerba says it has 4.5 carbs per Tablespoon, but like Shanny I can eat all the Optimist's crackers I want with no appreciable rise in my BG.

I can't imagine taking it as pills.

In that case, you'll just have to try it, test several times after you first eat it, and let your meter tell you how your body managed it. :)
