Well, it's finally happened ... I'm "erectile intolerant" ... yeah, I still have a sense of humor about it. It's happened in the past, when I lived in New York, my doctor gave me Viagra, and my insurance covered about 95% of the cost. I only used one prescription and never refilled it, as it may have been all in my <ahem> head. But now it's a concern. For the past 2 weeks I haven't been able to hold an erection long enough to engage in the act. We'll do foreplay and just as I'm about to consummate the act, it's gone, sometimes it dies in the mid act. If I was single, I wouldn't care much, but I'm 55 and my wife is 40, she hasn't complained about, she thinks it's all mental. I spoke to my doctor and he told me he can prescribe me Viagra, and I thought , great, that should jump start it, but when I went to the pharmacy, they wanted $400.00 for 6 pills and that was with the discount, I said, "nevermind".

So now I'm back to square one, ... has anyone here suffered from ED? What did you do? Did you take any supplements that helped that you recommend? Any suggestions would help.

Thanks

Well, I don't have the problem, so there's not much advice I can offer beyond doing a Web search for natural treatment erectile dysfunction (link is to DuckDuckGo Web search for those terms). Perhaps there will be some supplements or other treatments which will help without resorting to bank account depletion or scammy emails.

Sorry, I was slow in seeing this! I just had surgery on a umbilical hernia, not a big deal but it took a few days to get going.

I have asked about ED on this website, very few if any responded. I guess it is a difficult subject for many....to bad, because men with diabetes will eventually have ED, so knowledge for them and their spouse (girl friends) is important. Like most complications with diabetes, they can be bad, but you do not have to stop living...you just have to adapt!

I have struggled with ED for sometime. I am type 2, 67 years old, and married for 48 years. My wife, fortunately, has been very patient while I get educated about other options, aside from Viagra type drugs. They worked for me for some time, but over the last 3 years, they just do nothing! I assume you know about all the other drugs available, like Cialis and maybe a couple others, I have tried them all. Many doctors will give you samples to try before you have to buy any, some may work better or be less expensive depending on your medical insurance. Other options you may hear about like the 'pump' don't waste you time or money, the guy on the radio who says for $200 he can fix you. These guys are usually not even a Urologist and they offer a 'fizzy' Viagra that is supposed to be "much stronger" and an injectable, which they charge an arm and a leg for....again don't waste your time or money. Find a Urologist they are the best option from my experience.

I have been working with my Urologist and we are now using a formulated injectable. Sounds scary, I know.... but once you learn how to do the injection, on the side of your 'private part', it is not a big deal. Very thin needle and the drug does not burn or cause pain when injected. Once I figured out the right combination and the proper dosage, it has been good. And the cost per injection is small.....compared to Viagra

My Viagra did not cost a lot when I was using it, do to the insurance plan I was in when I was working. But many men I know, that wanted it, also paid a dear price for it. For me, I am welling to pay whatever... for what works, as this is still an important part of my life...I will cut back on other things to be able to have physical intimacy with my wife.

Finally, the last option is have surgery with an implant being put in. They have two, one that stays firm all the time, you can read up on that one. My understanding is that many insurance companies and Medicare pays for most of this....surgery.

The other option is an insert that can be inflated and deflated as needed. Those that get these like them a lot, I have spoke to others who have this. But the surgery and related costs can run up to $20,000 and nothing is covered by insurance.

Well that is about all I can think of, I have tried to leave out anything that would be an issue for others to read, but this topic is important, especially for diabetics.....feel free to send me a private message if you have added questions, as I have bee researching a dealing with this for some time....

Good Luck...don't give up, new options are showing up every year and tons of research is going on....

Yes, I use to have a prescription a few years ago and my insurance paid for most of it, cost me only a few dollars. Then I relocated to the Midwest, changed insurance companies and they wanted 400 bucks for just 6 pills, and that included the discount coupons that the pharmacy had. But the last 3 weeks have been difficult, like I said I'm 55 and my wife just turned 41, still in her prime, and I haven't been able to perform. I've tried all the supplements and vitamins that were recommended to me and NOTHING works.

I've even tried the generic brands of Viagra and Cialis online and they were all duds.

I'm well aware of all the quacks on the radio, I hear their commercials all the time.

Thanks for the feedback, maybe others will chime in in due time.

You know I'm 56 and I noticed by the time I hit 50 my erections were nothing like they were in my 20s and 30s. I just figured it was age. Never tried Viagara so I don't know if that would make a difference.

So I don't really have an answer to your question. I always assumed it was part of the aging process.

Love to see some stats, to see if this is normal or not.

Well I done tons of reading and research over the years because like you I started noticing changes in my 50's....and it is perfectly normal.

But it also is a common problem associated with diabetics. A quick answer, Viagra will probably help you since you are in the very early stages, depending on your insurance it can be a costly improvement.

I think I use Viagra for over 7-9 years and it was a good solution, but the group insurance I was on made it real affordable. Gave me a headache after it wore off, but aspirin fixed that.

Eventually it stopped working and I have covered my other options above....

Good luck....enjoy it while you can.....

From my own experience, I want to advise all of you to stop taking pills. With time they will cause heart diseases to you. I had a lot of problems because of Viagra with my blood flow. It was a very awful experience for me. Instead, my doc recommended me to use Phoenix Pro. This device is using ultra waves technology that is opening up the blood vessels. With the help of this device, my little friend became a strong rock. I got naturally rid of erectile dysfunction and I am very pleased with it.

Kensuke, I appreciate your concern. But allegations like yours need to be backed up by solid scientific studies and, at the very least, relation of your own experience.

We at Diabetes Forum do not believe in just throwing medications at chronic conditions like diabetes. Most of us here strongly hold that the food we eat is a critical component of managing our blood glucose levels. For some diabetics, however, diet and exercise alone do not provide enough control. No medication (or supplement or synthesized hormone) is perfect. However, if "natural" control methods are not enough, an informed considered choice to take medication should be made.
