Exciting news for me from endo

Hello Forum,

I know I'm not a regular poster and you all may not care to know this but I've told EVERYONE I know and still want to share the news some more...

Went to my endo today and he took me OFF metformin. Said I was doing really well and thinks I can tackle this "slow horse" pancreas with diet and exercise alone.

As much as I DREADED the big D when I was first diagnosed, I am now thanking my lucky stars that I caught it when I did (maybe not early enough but early enough to be able to control it on my own).

Who needs carbs, anyway??

Also, I saw a dietician who did recommend the "standard" 45-60g carbs per meal which I took with a grain of salt but she also recommended incorporating more fiber into my diet (which I know is not news to anyone here). Anyway, she suggested trying psyllium husk. So I bought some and have been sprinkling a teaspoon onto my meals (to a max of 2 tbsp a day). And maybe its just my body continually adapting to low carb eating but I have to say... I have re-introduced some fruits back into my diet sprinkled with psyllium husk with no unreasonable spike in my BGs. Has anyone else used psyllium husk??

I'm going to celebrate my great news with a bike ride :D

Congratulations, using no medications is great.

I don't use psyllium husk but I sometimes take a couple of Fenugreek seed capsules if there is no fiber in my meal.

"Who needs carbs, anyway??" I LOVE it! :D :D :D

You're one of us, hockey_gal, regardless of how much or how little you post. And we dearly LOVE good news like this! Thanks for coming to share with us - we're good help in triumphs as well as the more overwhelming times . . . ;) I'm glad your doc pays attention & has some good ideas for your "slow horse" pancreas.

And do come around now & again to keep us posted!

Foxl- LOL!! Thanks for the heads up... So far so good.

And Doc - congrats! I can only assume that you were as excited as I was. I have re-introduced some fruit unto my diet and that's where I get my carbs from now... Seems I can handle a bit more if I eat fruit and some fiber at the same time.

Well I have been eating fruit all along... Mostly Mango and Pineapple. Strange thing is they do not Spike me more than 20-30 points and since I am usually 80-90 I can handle 120 for a little bit. Now Bananas and apples... forget it.. 60-80... I think I jumped 30 just typing the words. My recommendation is test test test Do not be scared to try new things... What is right for you might not work for me and the other way around. Do not get me wrong... I wont do the white stuff... but a reasonable sweet potato is not that bad for me

Congratulations!

RE: fiber. I started out using psyllium husks and found that I didn't like the texture they impart. I use a ton of flax seed now, both ground and whole. I actually like the nutty flavor they add and find them a lot more useful for baking too.
