I went to the doctor yesterday as I have been feeling tired lately and have no energy. He prescribed a blood test. Among other tests I noticed he requested a fasting glucose blood test to be done. He told me it's a diabetes test. I went in this morning for my blood test after 12 hours without eating.

I go back for the test results next Thursday. If something is found in the results, will I get a call or will they just wait until my appointment?

I'm a bit confused as to why he made me get this particular test done. Do you think this is just routine or does he suspect I may have diabetes? I am 21, female, weigh 49 kg, am not pregnant and there is no family history of diabetes on either side of my family.

Does anyone have a similar story they'd like to share?

Thanks

no idea why he ordered the test either. any other symptoms like sudden weight loss? dizzy spells? irritiability?

I was diagnosed as a T2 diabetic at 26 and was in decent health at that time of my diagnosis

call the doctor ask them how they handle the results

Hello and welcome to the forum! Maybe your doctor is just covering his bases and perhaps he just wants to be sure to rule out diabetes. If you have something wrong and it is mild, you will probably get your results when you have your appointment. Call his office and ask why he is running this test.

I think the fasting blood sugar is just a standard test to help determine the state of your health.

My diabetes was discovered by a routine blood test - I had no symptoms, no suspicions - the test was done just as a routine matter.

When that routine test showed a bit high the nurse called the next day to schedule the glucose tolerance test, but I didn't have another appointment scheduled so I guess that could go either way.

I think it's become standard operating procedure for most docs, and it's called a basic metabolic panel (BMP). So checking the glucose is just another facet of this basic group of tests.

Welcome to DF, Katina . . . and keep us posted about your results.

For a long time they never tested your fasting bg unless you had a family history of diabetes or were over a certain age. I am glad they are beginning to test everyone. Many times people have diabetes with no symptoms at all. Early diagnosis is the best hope for controlling bg before it does damage to your body. Be happy your doc is proactive.
