My generic version of extended release Metformin has a fishy smell.
I know the immediate release form of Metformin in does but should the extended release form?
My pharmacist has never heard of that problem (I think she meant with any form of Metformin which is not reassuring).

I wasn't aware that it had a fishy odor. I don't know that I've ever smelled of my metformin, but I have had a metal-like taste when I take it with certain foods, I swallow my pills with food.

Now that I have searched for it and found that it is known that some brands of metformin do have a fishy odor, I'm gonna have to go smell my bottle. Oh, and in the info I read said that the extended release version should have less of an odor.

My olfactory senses are not very good, compared to my wife's, so I don't smell many things that she does. You probably have her sense of smell. However, neither she or I smell anything in my bottle of metformin.

Mine is getting worse.
I'll take it in and ask.

I have been binging on cranberry juice thinking that I have an infection in my penis. Smelled like rotten fish - awful! I was excruciatingly obsessed with cleansing my Wee Willy Johnson. Two days or so ago, i happened to notice a milder version of the same smell when opening the container of metformin. So glad to see that I am not alone and that I won’t embarrass myself by going to my doctor ‘suffering from a UTI’! Are there suggestions for dealing with this?

Hi, Diaberic. Welcome to the site! I'll bet all that cranberry juice didn't do much good for your blood glucose levels!

Are you using regular metformin or the extended-release version? The reports I see are that the regular version smells worse/fishier (I make no judgment ;)) than the ER version (which has a coating that hides the smell better). The level of smell also seems related to the manufacturer; you might want to see if your metformin can come from another pharmaceutical company.

Since you're here, it would be great to learn more about you and how you've been managing your diabetes. Would you post a little about yourself in our New Member Introductions forum?
