I'll have to try bacon - never thought of it with squash! But then, I didn't eat bacon until I was dx'ed because of the fat, ha!

I make my yellow squash with onion and lots of fresh basil.

Such a treasure. Such a lovely and precious note.

I have my mom's also but it's not as extensive as your mom's. She used her mother-in-law's handwritten cookbook from the 1910's-20's to make the most amazing traditional Hungarian dishes. I have that one too, a real gem, only problem is that it's in Hungarian!
