Ok so there may be a thread here somewhere and I just missed it but I have been on a pump since 11/29/13! I love it, usually and my sugar has been pretty controlled, my last A1C was only 7.2!!!! however, the past 2 months something hasn't been right... My sugar spikes at weird times and now my sugar is out of control! I haven't really done anything different but I haven't eaten since 5 pm yesterday, and been drinking only water because I have no appetite at all. My sugar was 288 this morning when I got up and now after a morning bolus and a correction bolus, its 304!!!! I am making an appointment with a doctor but has anyone had this happen to them? The high sugar makes me feel full even though I haven't eaten, and water shouldn't make my sugar higher than normal.. please help.. any suggestions will be very welcomed!

How do you know that the pump is injecting the insulin you order it to inject?

It sounds to me as if something isn't working, or is clogged.

Honestly I know it is giving insulin but as to the amount, I don't know.. I have done the self tests and all that and everything seems to be working properly

I don't know much of anything about insulin or pumps, but like RCG, it sounds like you're not getting any/enough or something is wrong with the insulin. Hopefully some pumpers will be along soon with suggestions.

When you are on a pump and blood sugar goes high, like over 250 you should give yourself an injection. Check your blood sugar regularly and if it's still high, you might be sick or getting sick or something else going on.

Once you give yourself an injection, change out the infusion site, tubing, reservoir and open a new vial of insulin. Change it all and then check blood sugars until you know you are getting insulin.

My blood sugar goes high quite regularly because I take blood thinners and the canula gets occluded. A few times I dropped the pump and the canula pulled out a little and blood sugar went high. usually though this happens after i changed the infusion set and the blood is in the canula. I just call medtronic and the replace the infusion sets without a problem.

My doc had just changed my basals.. however I figured I would change my tubing and low and behold some how I had pulled it out just enuff that it was bent and the insulin was pooling under the set, not in me!! I am so dumb to know have thought of that before.. I guess in the almost 2 years I have been pumping I have never had this happen before! Thanks all.. hoping for my normal levels tomorrow :)

Just to add something else:

My pump (Omnipod) alarms with any sort of delivery irregularity, so I always know if there's a pump problem. If there's any pump question at all I definitely call them. Likely they'll tell you to change the Pod or infusion set, etc. but at least they'll replace it for free. They definitely don't want us having pump problems as they are life threatening.

My glucose is wildly erratic for a variety of reasons and I haven't (nor have two endocrinologists) been able to sort out a consistent basal rate.

Since I can't establish a reliable basal for the pump to vary throughout the day, on my own, I've set six different basals of a single delivery increment ranging from 0.05 to 1.50. I switch them depending on what's going on. It's trying, but the only thing that works.

This also means that my insulin/carb ratio and correction factors are rarely accurate so I've had to develop a refined sense of bolus amounts and adjust it up or down according to my "guesstimate" at meals or spikes. I also have to do finger sticks starting an hour after bolus just to keep track.

Lastly, my endocrinologist downloads pump data when I visit but I make sure to keep a record of the basal rates, I/C ratio and correction factors he's established as a reminder for us both.

Congratulations on that A1c of 7.2! Haven't been able to get mine under 8.2 since my "honeymoon" period.

By the way, you may find my post on my CGM "Dexcom Share" of interest.

I agree with e person who stated that you should take an injection, check your sugar again after a few minutes and change site. I have had this same issue except I feel ok. My issue has been going on for over a year and I have been on my pump since Nov. 2013. Anytime I change my site now, my sugar goes up. I ahve been a Type 1 since 1969. I feel it's scar tissue build up but, I still feel something could and should be done. I posted about this. Good Luck !!!!
