I've been diagnosed with GD at 7 weeks pregnant. From what I hear this is impossible and it only comes up later? Does this mean I had it before?

The doctors refuse to tell me either way. I only found out about diabetes because I was in hospital for cellulitis and was worried about the baby, they happened to do a fasting blood sugar.

1st one was 7.3
2nd one was 6.7

hba1c (is that right? lol) was 43 and metric conversion I think is about 6 - 6.1 ?

The annoying thing is that on march 26 (probably near the time I conceived) my glucose levels were already 5.5 (fasting) but nobody bothered to tell me. At my doctors office there is a sign saying that no news is good news.

You're not alone. If you read the older threads here, you will see that most doctors say nothing to people until their fasting blood sugar is at diabetic level, then whack them onto Metformin or insulin.

I have to admit, I've always lead a very very bad lifestyle (funny enough I never drink alcohol though lol).. I've smoked all my life, I am currently at a BMI of 55.. I brought this on myself.. but I am sure telling me that I am pre-diabetic would have scared the bejesus out of me alone! Enough to at least have had a chance to do something about it immediately..

I had a 5.0 fasting pregnancy one.. they were a little concerned but not overly. After pregnancy of course my fasting years ago from memory was about 3.9.

I always felt I had time to fix my life, biggest mistake ever. I had always told myself that diabetes will never come for you before you are 50 lol. *shakes head* How wrong I was! And I will spend the rest of my life making sure people are aware of my example.

My pancreas thinks I am idiot ;)

Life and our bodies have a nasty habit of pulling us back into line when we become a bit too complacent.

You've been given a good wake-up, as I was, with numbers that are only just in the diagnosable range, so it's up to us to be grateful we found out before too much damage has been done to our pancreases and beta cells.

With Type 2 , the Insulin Resistance and Metabolic Syndrome may be present for as long as 10 years. But usually the fasting bgs are the last to rise. So it is very hard for doctors to identify patients in the early stages of diabetes. The good thing is now that you are diagnosed you can take actions to control what you eat and have a healthier pregnancy. Many people who are dx'd in the early stages of Pre Diabetes or Diabetes can manage their disease very easily. I also think working with your doctor to lose weight will really help your diabetes.

I'd say you are one of the lucky ones...you are at the early stages and you can bring it under control without a lot of damage to your organs. When mine was found I had an A1C of 6.9 but over 18 months I've brought it down to 5.0 and lost the 50 lbs I'd been carrying around needlessly. You do have time to 'fix' things and get things under control. Your fasting is the last to rise and the last to drop or at least for most of us. You may be able to go without drugs after your pregnancy is over for many years if you adjust your eating.

I do not believe we bring this on ourselves. Our bodies are somehow genetically prone to it and there are many theories about viruses setting it off or just plain genetically predisposed. There are lots of theories, but overweight does not seem likely as there are many overweight types who do not have it and some very normal weight people develop it also. So, don't blame yourself...it does no good!

My brother got it at 17 and my mom at 19 when I was born and full blown type 2 right after that. It can happen to anyone at anytime.

My doc is now saying it's pre diabetes based on my fasting glucose 6.3 and a1c of 6.1. Apparently I invalidated my original test for not eating for 18 hours before hand (not my blood fault the hospital told me not to eat) and having a smoke before hand.

Test from yesterday came back at 5.7 (fasting), no smoking, fasting 12 hours.

How can you be diagnosed diabetic and then pre diabetic?

By the numbers you are diagnosed...5.7 is close, 6.1 must be the new number.

It really doesn't matter. If you assume diabetic the better off you'll be in the long run...

You will be diabetic if you continue the path you are on, so take a short cut and treat yourself and possibly avoid the hassle of diabetes for a long, long time.

Just my opinion...

I hate to be the ... termite, in the punchbowl, but. There is yet another possibility.

I belong to a LADA FB group. LADA is Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults. It is a form of Type 1 with slow onset. Many members there (not me) were "caught" by the gestational diabetes screening in pregnancy. Whether it was related to the pregnancy, or pre-existing, I do not know. Be sure to get GAD-65 antibody testing. Some women go for years and years with a T2 diagnosis, eating less and less, and getting nowhere in controlling their diabetes. That can be very challenging and disheartening!

Do read the Blood Sugar 101 website, on LADA AND on Type 2, and everything else!

A few months back I found a bunch of reports from 2006 one of which had my fasting level well over 100 (but below 125) but no one bothered to tell me. I was told all ok and generally told to loose weight. No one even pointed blood sugar issues. I wish I see that doctor again. I would like to kill him or atleast push a cactus up his back side (sorry for the disturbing graphic, but thats what I feel about him)

I think these levels correspond with the condition or pre diabetes or a very early state of diabetes which I suppose should be easily manageable, if you try....

I am not sure of the recommendation for blood sugars during pregnancy but if this is inclining towards pre diabetes and type 2 it's a very early stage and as I said perfectly manageable. I found out that I had diabetes when my hba1c had already reached about 13

My doc put me on Metformin when my A1C hit 6. Do not blame yourself for your BMI, our governments and doctors push the high-carb low-fat lifestyle and that is bound to pack on the pounds, especially if you're insulin resistant. I've lost 40 lbs since going low-carb high-fat and I don't limit my food at all. Except for carbs of course. :)

Hi everyone! Sorry about the tie in between!!

I am now 11.4 weeks pregnant. I really had nothing to post before because it was all a waiting game waiting for the referal to the diabetes clinic which can take a few weeks in New Zealand.

Got my meter today, 2 hours post breakfast was 5.2. (around 93.6)

I've lost 15 kilo's since my post post and according to the doctor have a new BMI of 52 from 55!! YAYAYAY!

Having trouble getting the meter to actually prick THROUGH my skin for some reason, if I press hard enough and get it on the right angle then I bleed but it doesn't go through the skin otherwise?! Is this normal? So I just have to press extra hard or something?

Midwife reckons that at all times my blood sugar levels should be between 4 - 6.5 (even post meal) so this should be interesting! ;)

Apparently anything over 6.5 is bad for the baby, she also said that even though the diagnosis is early not to lose hope that the diabetes isn't gestational.. apparently the only way anybody can tell for sure is to wait till after I have given birth and re test then. Keeping my fingers crossed that it is just GD.

If not, I will be booking a gastric bypass!! My brother had/s type 2 diabetes and has lost 400lb he is a skinny little rake now hehe.. but his BG levels have never left normal since 4 days after the Gastric bypass.. definately something I will be looking at after the pregnancy if I do have type 2..

Here in New Zealand if you go on a waiting list you can have a free GB through public if you have type 2 diabetes plus another health problem.. which the doctor said I can put down a weak bladder or something :)

Hope you are all well!

Love Jay:eek:

I have the best success testing on the outside of my pinkies and ring fingers, not the pads. The skin on the side is thinner and if you rub your finger a bit above where you stick yourself (until the site gets plump and red) the blood comes out pretty easily.

Hi guys, quick update :)

I'm now 32 weeks pregnant. My last a1c was 5 so that's awesome news! :D

Unfortunately I have been put on metformin even though the diet is going well I'm not getting enough carbs and bubs is small for dates, so they want me to up the carbs and take metformin.

Not long to go! Good news is my hospital GP/Obs are working together to see if they can get me a public funded gastric bypass 6 months after the pregnancy.. I'm very excited! :D
