Hi everyone, I've been lurking on this site for a few weeks reading alot and learning quite a bit. I was dignosed Type 2 two years ago. My GP put me on 500mg of metformin which I used for about 3 months until I developed a severe rash. As my numbers were excellent, he took me off all meds. I ate well, exercised and lost some weight which brought my fasting glucose to the 80-90 range.

Fast forward two years, I slid back into all my old habits and found all that weight I'd lost. I hadn't checked glucose in some time and was devastated to see it 310 fasting. I started eating better and exercising and am now averaging 90-105 fasting for about a month.

Are these numbers ok, provided I maintain them or should I see my gp to discuss meds. I'd like to avoid meds as long as possible but realize it is likely inevitable. Thanks for letting me share my story.

good begining

Tony,

Fasting numbers are hust the beginning of it. You need to check your BG before and 2 hours after every meal to evaluate your condition. The lab test HbA1C will give a better picture of you blood level control over three month.

Hello Tony, welcome to Diabetes Forum! Iris gave you good advice, testing frequently and keeping records of how certain foods affect your blood sugar can be very helpful. Type 2 is progressive and you will probably need medication later on. I hope you will diet and exercise so you can avoid medication for a long time. There are also many Type 2 diabetics who use insulin when medication no longer provides them with good control. Keep doing the best you can, your numbers sound good.

Seeing an endocrinologist (diabetes specialist) would also be a good step to take. An endo should give you very good advice and be able to prescribe the appropriate treatments in the future.

G'day Tony :D, I see that you have good advice already. Exercise buy it's self is apart of any diet, A diet that have a good balance of carbs, Fiber & Protein. This will not just keep the Blood Glucose down, It will lower the weight too. As far as exercise goes, Choose an activity that you like as that is your decision to make. Not anyone else's. ;)
