My name is Addie and I'm a Type 2 diabetic. I was diagnosed August of 2008 with an A1c of 11.3% and a non-fasting BG of 346 mg/dL.

Right now I am on a very low-carbohydrate diet, as well as Metformin and Glyburide. I am proud to say that I have lost 53 pounds so far and that I brought my A1c down to 5.0% as of my last doctor's appointment in March.

I feel so much better now than I have in years, especially because of the significant weight loss! Right now my goal is to improve my HDL and lower my total cholesterol while maintaining good blood sugar.

I have joined other diabetes forums on the internet, but I am always looking for more information, support, and advice.

Hello Addie::)

Good to meet you. Wow! You're certainly a Doer!! To bring both your weight and A1c down that much is Terrific. Good Job!

Cutting down on some dairy products like cheese, will help to lower the Bad cholesterol. Also eating 2 small handfuls of almonds a day will lower the Bad cholesterol without weight gain. Probably because they are eaten slowly and they are filling.

Like you, we all enjoy learning new tricks and news about Diabetes and other topics. Welcome!
Thanks, everyone!

I have heard about the positive effects of almonds on cholesterol. I wish almond were my favorite nut. I have some every day (along with cashews and macadamia), but maybe I should increase my almond intake. I'm also taking fish oil and eating flax. I don't know if I can give up cheese. :)

HA! Ya, you and me both. I'm not fussy about the taste of almonds but I eat them anyways. Sometimes I take a handful of my Hubby's chocolate coated almonds(22grs./crbs. per 8 pieces). There is not much chocolate on them so it doesn't hurt my sugars. Are cashews and macadamian nuts Good for lowering cholesterol also?

Ya, I take daily fish oil and a couple tablespoons of flax seed daily usually.
I think that many of us cannot just give up the things that they say is bad and I am a big sucker for Cheese!!!, Yeah love the stuff and what better that is free of carbs and that's is why we love it so much hey! But what better to have cheese is a nice bottle of red! yeah.
Cholesterol is my battle too and I cannot give up my cheese. :(:eek:

Oh Peter!! :D You and your cheese. I didn't say to give it up by the way, I said cut down on your cheese intake some. I think that I mentioned before that if you eat too much cheese, it will raise your sugar also. Too much of almost any food will raise your sugar. Sorry to spoil your day...but I hope it's sunny in Australia. ;)
