Welcome aboard, Nan! We seem to have several things in common already - diabetes, of course. But I lived on the Front Range for 20+ years, and my mom used to call me "Nan". heheh 
It's sort of a shame, but I've found that the really good advice comes from these forums where people are living the life. For whatever reason, docs, dietitians & diabetes educators don't always get it, and you really have to figure out what works best for you and then stick to your guns. It helps to keep track - keep a log/journal of your readings & diet, so you can show them your numbers to prove your regimen is working.
Yes, your children prob'ly have a genetic predisposition to diabetes, since both you & your husband have it, but they can learn to eat right & maintain proper weight, etc., so as to have a better chance of dodging the bullet, so to speak.
