Hi , I'm Benjamin a 19 year old newly diagnosed type 1 diabetic. I was diagnosed during the end of the summer this year. Put a real damper on my life. I live in Oregon , in a small town called The Dalles moved here for school originally from Wasco an even smaller town in Central Oregon. Going to my local community College for a couple more terms until I move into the big city of Portland for Portland State. But Ive been managing my betes pretty well . I have an awesome support group . My girl friend and her family have really helped me get used to the huge life style change. ( my girlfriends step dad has type 2 )

There was no history of Diabetes in my family so doctors arnt sure why i have it. I'm very active . Play tennis 2 to 3 times a week . I was raised eating healthy foods and making healthy choices but i ended up with it . So yeah that's me in a nutshell :D
I look forward to being an active member of the forum

Hi Benjamin,
Welcome to the Forum. I am a type 2 so will not be able to help you much several of the topics. All I can say is that you will fine. We have several Type 1's on this forum who have succesfully managed their Diabetes over several decades (including 50+ years). They should be coming online in some time.

It's great to have a strong support group around you. It's really nice you are getting such support from your partner and the family. This forum will also serve as a strong support platform with friends who can understand you.

How have your numbers been so far ? Are you following any specific diet program ?

Welcome again

Hello & welcome, Ben. I bet most people who have diabetes were totally blind-sided, same as you were. And the worst possible timing, eh? Well you have a good attitude & a good support group - I think you'll get along just fine. We have many type 1 members - some new to the drill, and others who've been managing for decades. You'll fit right in here. Ask anything you want to know - someone will have been there, done that & have suggestions for you.

Take care, visit often & thank you for joining us. ;)

Thank you all for your kind words. I'm sure I'll fit in wonderfully. You all seem like really nice people . My numbers have been good here of late low 100's to high 90's ofcourse there are acouple of terrible lows in there but that's to be expected I suppose. I'm on a multiple injection 20 units of lantus at night and novoalog at meals 1 for every 15 carbs. But I'm suppose to be getting between 60 to 70 carbs per meal but other than that I'm not on a diet. Thank goodness x)

Hi Ben, welcome! I eat an average of 30-35 carbs per meal. If I ate 60 carbs per meal I would gain weight and have to almost double my bolus insulin dosages. You do not have to eat that much at meals. I know very few type 1 diabetics who have big meals. Several smaller meals, with lower insulin dosages is healthier. 130-140 total carbs per day works well for me.

I have been type 1 for 66 years, and am very healthy. With good control, we can have long, healthy lives!

Hi and welcome!
I`m also a type 1 and has been on insulin for 13 months.
I love that you have lots of support around you. It makes it so much easier!
On the beginning of my life with diabetes I ate like you, but after a while I really got frustrated of the low which knocked me down several times a day, and I started to live LCHF. That made my life much easier!
Hope you will find lots of info in here!
