Hi to all. My name is Arthur, I am 63 (at Christmas) and have been a type 2 since diagnosis in 2001 - with a fasting BS of 24!!
I am on 2x 500mg metformin (twice a day) and 80mg of gliclazide (twice a day) as well as BP and Cholesterol medication.
Following diagnosis I got my H1 down to 7ish then down to 5's where it stayed till middle of 2010 when it went up to 7.1. Couple of reasons more this - got married to Dot who is a wonderful, loving, kind and caring person (she just told me to write that!!), I became a bit complacent - and my treadmill broke. Got H1 back down to 6.6 after six months and then to 6.1 following my most recent tests. Wanted to wait another couple of weeks for it as I feel that if I been able to wait that bit longer my results would have once again been in the 5's.
I don't low-carb as such but have reduced them quite dramatically. I eat unrefined carbs and low GI. Only problem is I have a VERY sweet tooth!!
I had put on 10 stone prior to diagnosis (despite latterly being on a low cal diet) but once diagnosed I lost over 8 and half stone. Still struggle daily with my weight as although now back to being thin I still have a 'diabetic' tummy.
Have had many recurrent bouts of pancreatitis (possibly one of the reasons I got diabetes - although there were other very important factors as well). Had a gall-stone stuck in pancreatic tract which resulted in a 5 inch cyst so I was very ill with it. Still had bouts upto 2009 when I had my gall-bladder out.
So I - like everyone else on this forum - is fighting the fight to maintain good control over my BS. I have a lot of good days and some bad ones as well but can only do my best.
