Hi to all. My name is Arthur, I am 63 (at Christmas) and have been a type 2 since diagnosis in 2001 - with a fasting BS of 24!!
I am on 2x 500mg metformin (twice a day) and 80mg of gliclazide (twice a day) as well as BP and Cholesterol medication.
Following diagnosis I got my H1 down to 7ish then down to 5's where it stayed till middle of 2010 when it went up to 7.1. Couple of reasons more this - got married to Dot who is a wonderful, loving, kind and caring person (she just told me to write that!!), I became a bit complacent - and my treadmill broke. Got H1 back down to 6.6 after six months and then to 6.1 following my most recent tests. Wanted to wait another couple of weeks for it as I feel that if I been able to wait that bit longer my results would have once again been in the 5's.
I don't low-carb as such but have reduced them quite dramatically. I eat unrefined carbs and low GI. Only problem is I have a VERY sweet tooth!!
I had put on 10 stone prior to diagnosis (despite latterly being on a low cal diet) but once diagnosed I lost over 8 and half stone. Still struggle daily with my weight as although now back to being thin I still have a 'diabetic' tummy.
Have had many recurrent bouts of pancreatitis (possibly one of the reasons I got diabetes - although there were other very important factors as well). Had a gall-stone stuck in pancreatic tract which resulted in a 5 inch cyst so I was very ill with it. Still had bouts upto 2009 when I had my gall-bladder out.
So I - like everyone else on this forum - is fighting the fight to maintain good control over my BS. I have a lot of good days and some bad ones as well but can only do my best.

Welcome to the forums from an equally windy Stockholm, Arthur! That was one high fasting BG at Dx! Glad to see you have gotten control over your numbers which, for many, still eludes them. Any time you want me to yank that ol' sweet tooth out, just let me know! ;)

Hi and thanks for your reply. Got the dentist on Mon - wish it was that easy!! Nowadays I can usually resist sweets and desserts but just sometimes I will let myself go. Worst is - we eat out a lot and I have a salad with gammon or steak etc and then sometimes ruin it with a banofee dessert or we eat at a supermarket restaurant and they've just reduced the price of the cakes!! I DO try tho!!

Welcome to DF. I think the best way to combat that sweet tooth is to make some D friendly treats. Yesterday I made a double batch of Chocolate Chip/Pecan cookies. Since I used almond meal, flaxseed and erythitol and chopped up dark chocolate for the chips, these cookies don't spike me at all. Check out our recipe forum for lots of D friendly recipes. The eating out thing is hard for me. I have started to order off the menu to get the best D friendly food. I also bring my own 0 carb salad dressings with me to avoid the hidden sugars in the dressing.

Hello Arthur and welcome to the forum. I'm a new boy on the block being caught only in August last year with a fasting blood sugar of 22 mmol/L and an HbA1c of 8.2%. Trigger? A massive E-Coli infection which tripped me into DKA.

I've learned my lesson. I've (with the help of my wife) killed off my sweet tooth. No sugar and no artificial sweeteners either. The first week or two is difficult but with a choice of killing myself or my sweet tooth - what would you go for?

Losing weight? - Try cutting your carbs in half - which is basically again what I did. I lost roughly 1 lb per week between August and February. From a modestly overweight 13 stone down to slightly under 11 stone on a diet that never went below 1800 calories per day.

My HbA1c is now 5% and my average fasting is around 4.6.

You've found two great resources:

  • This forum - they are a really friendly knowledgeable bunch who have been through it all. You have a question - they will have the answer! :)
  • A great site to look at Blood Sugar 101. Jenny Ruhl, the author is diabetic and gives some excellent information on the issues in a non technical way without oversimplification.
Welcome again. John

Welcome Arthurk
I had gall stones too. I got pancreatitis and a 10 cm cyst. They had to attach pancreas to my stomach. We did not have a fun time with that , did we? Lol
I became a diabetic over night. This is a great place to learn.
