How Do You Deal With Cold Weather?

6725 Views 29 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  aimster1mo
When I woke up this morning, the snow was falling and it is really cold. I don't like cold weather and avoid going outside as much as possible. I hate hats and gloves and boots. I deal with cold weather by avoiding going outside but gosh everyone needs groceries at least once a week. How is your weather and how do you cope with the cold?

embrace it. dress appropriately. I'm not much of a cold fan and I live on the prairies in Canada so it gets cold...for long periods of time. If I hide inside for too long I start getting very depressed and we all know where that goes...bad eating choices, poor health choices. I try and get in the occasional FUN outdoor activity - x country skiing, snowshoeing (although I haven't managed so far this winter), focus on the fact that I seem to burn through sugar at a faster rate in the cold :) and a nice fire or hot drink when I come home feels like a reward.
I just back my old butt up to this woodstove and stay inside! I usually have to elbow my way between the dog & the cat who have permanent reserved parking places on the hearth. :D

Since we're rural, we usually have a fair stock of staples, so don't worry much about having to get out. And we've already had offers that if we need anything, there are friends who'll deliver! (strangely enough, some of these friends are as old & decrepit as we! lol!)
My suggestion is to move to a warmer climate. :D We intended to move south from NY when I retired in 1997, but my wife was so depressed about moving when the time came. She would be miserable if we moved, and I do love NY, so we are staying. My idea was to move to Georgia, not far from Atlanta, so we could be close to our son an grandchildren who live there. It would be so much warmer there. We get to see the grandkids only once or twice each year. That is not enough to suit me. :(

When we lived in Maine it was just part of life from December-March... So I went out when needed and kept the stove loaded...here in Washington if it snows my butt is not going anywhere...they have no clue...lol The thing here is dealing with all the rain
im not happy about it. i can live with the cold and wind, but the rain and snow are not good because they limit my walking, and that ticks me off
Hubby puts the Blizzak tires on my car. I throw in the winter emergency kit bag (gloves, hiking boots, ski jacket, hand warmers, blanket, food, water, etc).
I put the long johns on under my office clothes (and a third layer of sweats on top if necessary) and off I go.
I will never own a car I don't have Blizzak tires for. I drive 41 miles one way to work and I've never slid an inch with these tires - only problem is the other cars!
I agree with Chesney that the rain here already keeps me from much outdoor exercise (and the fact that I don't get home until way after dark) so I just try to find ways to keep moving inside.
Brrrrrrr

Central Ohio is headed down to 10 degrees tonight with the wind chill. Ouch....I won't be headed out anytime soon. Too cold for me!
Breezeonby -

I will trade you weather forecasts. Northern IL is forecasting 0 degrees tonight with a wind chill of -10 degrees. It is really cold and I have to go out tomorrow afternoon for an appointment and one errand at the store. After that I'm heading home and I will snuggle under a big afghan and do some knitting.
Car doors frozen shut today! I finally tugged on the passenger side back door and I did get it open. It wasn't a pretty site to see me climbing over to the front seat! I want to move......to Arizona!!!!
Oh geez, Breeze . . . you've reminded me of something I hadn't thought about for years - the vehicles' doors freezing shut! There was one time the only way we were ever gonna get out was the 4WD Jeep pickup, and it was the one vehicle completely glazed over with about 3/8-inch of ice! We could get into the car & it even started, but it couldn't move on all that ice! I finally called in to work & begged off that day . . .
ICE is a bad word. I don't know how you survive living outside in the country. I wouldn't last a week! Mom wanted to go to the store and she couldn't get in the car. So, I got dressed (really slow) and went out and got her into the car.
So, if I remind you guys that I live in Texas and it is currently sunny and 73 degrees outside...am I going to have to duck and run??

that would be "yes".

I will give you a head start to duck and run......how dare you tell us it is 73 and sunny why we are all shivering in our coats and boots and cars sliding all over the place and.....and.....and.....have a nice day!!
In view of more precipitation in our forecast tonight/tomorrow, we scooted our old bones into town for supplies just now. And got some good bargains too . . . three packages of cube steaks reduced - they were cheaper per pound than the hamburger, so - sez I - if we get a hankering for a hamburger, we'll have a steak sandwich instead! We came home with a good stock of several meat items, & all for under $2/lb. 'Course we came home $100 poorer too . . . ah well . . . and they were out of a lotta things because everybody's doing the same as we - bracing for the next onslaught.
I am suffering severely. No seriously I am. I don't think it is anything to do with diabetes I think it is due to me losing weight. I am constantly freezing and can never get warm. It has been -14 deg F for the last couple of days here in the morning. Even last summer when it was 75 outside I felt chilled. Now that winter is here I just can't put enough clothes on. Almost make me want to get fat again  NO just kidding.
You guys got hammered up there this week . . . we were on the far southern edges of it & we have it bad enough. I've had to have a flannel robe on all the time - two pair wool sox on and still wrap a lap robe around my legs when I'm in my rocking chair in the living room. And we have radiant heat that nearly roasts us, but the wind gets in every little ***** when it blows like it has this week . . . so still seems like lots of drafts (there are some serious tradeoffs for living in a 100+ year old house! :().

I bought myself a small room ceramic heater and I keep it on the floor when I am on my computer and it keeps me really warm. I paid $20 for it and it was worth every penny. It is also light weight enough to carry to any room in the house. GET ONE :D

Would I be wrong if I proposed to Pam just to move to Texas?
