My suggestion is to move to a warmer climate. 
We intended to move south from NY when I retired in 1997, but my wife was so depressed about moving when the time came. She would be miserable if we moved, and I do love NY, so we are staying. My idea was to move to Georgia, not far from Atlanta, so we could be close to our son an grandchildren who live there. It would be so much warmer there. We get to see the grandkids only once or twice each year. That is not enough to suit me.
