Metformin alone will not make you lose weight, add exercise in with cutting out carbs, and the weight will come off

Unfortunatley I can't exercise because i have a very bad lower back due to my weight. :( So any weight loss by any other means is totally appreciated. I've already lost a little bit of weight just in these past few days of using metformin. I haven't yet changed my diet. So it seems (thus far) that it might actually work for me to lose weight.

Actually, yes, it will. JAMA -- Abstract: Lifestyle Intervention and Metformin for Treatment of Antipsychotic-Induced Weight Gain: A Randomized Controlled Trial, January 9/16, 2008, Wu et al. 299 (2): 185 Doctors have even prescribed it for that purpose, just as Benadryl is often used as a sleeping aid in the elderly. (Prescribing a drug for the main side effect)

My experience mirrors Cathy's . . . my weight loss on metformin has been about 35#, and I'm still over 200#, but have not regained any weight in a year.

The effect I noticed early on is that metformin curbs my appetite, so while I may still battle the munchies day in & day out, it doesn't take much to feel full - portion control has become a non-issue around here! Like last night I took three hot wings on my plate; two would've been a big plenty, and one would prob'ly have been enough.

Thanks for that link, Cathy . . . I may suggest to our doc that he presribe met for my everlovin' DH, since he's on Zyprexa & has been for ten years. He has trouble getting under 200# also.

Woke up with a sore throat, it might be thrush from the Advair or the steroids that I was just on, will call my Doctor in the morning. I didn't sleep very well, I tossed and turned all night long and my nasal cannula kept slipping around despite it being very tight under my chin, I really want to get rid of the oxygen, hopefully when I get my lung CT, that will explain some things. Took a nap from noon to 2PM and then got up and did some studying. Boy, the weekend sure did go by fast.

Aww. I got thrush from being on steroids in the hospital followed by an antibiotic. That happened just 2 weeks ago. I certainly isn't fun. I hope you get well soon. I'm worried about ya.

I went to the doc and he prescribed an anti-fungal lozenge. Clortrimazole? Something like that. I only took it for a few days (5 times a day) it made my tongue and roof of my mouth super sore and sensitive to hot and cold. But it cleared up the thrush even though I only took it for a few days, not the full 14 days that's prescribed.

Today was a nice day. Got some Nystatin Suspension for my thrush. I have a pneumonia follow-up with my PCP on Thursday and will talk to him about giving me something to have on hand all of the time. I have had trouble with thrush problems before and the main culprit was the Advair. I keep taking naps at noon and I am taking 600MG of Gabapentin for my neuropathy at 10AM and I am just so tired after taking the Gabapentin. I am taking 900MG at bedtime and it really helps with sleep. That is one reason why I take my larger dose at bedtime is because it makes me sleepy. I don't know what to do about the AM dose. Thank goodness I work from home or I would be falling asleep at my desk at someone's office. I don't drink coffee but I might start to see if it would help me stay awake at noon. Got to get all my meds together to see what I need refill's on, I get most of my meds every 3 months and this is one of those months. I need 11 refills

Today was a good day. I was hungry all day and was tempted to eat some pound cake that my Mom bought, but I fought the urge and so far so good. I am having my chest cat scan tomorrow. I can't eat or drink after 7AM, why I don't know. I asked and the person on the phone said something dumb like "we don't like food showing on the scan" I am having a scan of my chest not my stomach, how would food show up on a chest scan? I wanted to jump through the phone and strangle this person....how frustrating.:frusty:

interesting day.

Went to my endo today for my 3 month checkup, and of course, he was not happy about my weight loss. i even left on my shoes, clothes and the works when i got on their scale, it gave me 5lbs on their scale lol

all my blood work numbers are good, (but) my A1C is up to 5.1 (from 4.7 in June), but he was pleased with the 5.1. Now that im eating more (since my last A1C) i expected it to go up some.

My Cholesterol has improved (Overall from 184 to 164; HDL 36 to 61; LDL 102 to 92) Triglycerides 230 to 55, BGL 265 to 95

there are some other numbers in my report, but i dont know what they mean

Ugh. my day is going blah. i really am trying to eat more food. it also really is (as weird as this may sound coming from a formally fat man) a difficult task.

today for the first time in a very very long time, i am voluntarily eating man made carbs (im having a low-carb wrap with mayo, ham cheese and lettuce) in an attempt to stop losing weight.

half way through the wrap, ive had to stop do to bloated feeling.

thank you once again for this forum, its the only place i can talk about things like this without people thinking im totally crazy

During some of my past weight loss periods when I was eating a low calorie diet, I allowed myself to have a regular meal of my choice once a week and I found myself having problems with some of the foods. Your body is trying to let you know that it is not used to eating certain foods. You are right about the forum, you can talk like you want and most won't think you are crazy! :D

This weekend has been nice. My beloved Ohio State Buckeyes football team had another win yesterday and they are 3-0-0. Conference games begin soon and the Big Ten will begin the battles on the field.

Blood glucose has been very good all weekend and I have started taking my Metformin ER. No real problems yet. I can't wait until I can work my way up to a therapeutic dose to see if it is going to help with my insulin resistance. One day at a time though.

The leaves are just starting to fall off the trees and many leaves are changing colors. In no time, fall will be upon us and the holiday season will be here.

I hope everyone had a good weekend! ;)

Yesterday was an interesting day. Got up and went out to the kitchen to take my morning meds and prune juice and after I finished, I was so sleepy and went back to bed for about an hour. I had a 1:30PM appointment to see my pulmonary specialist. Really didn't find much out about my ongoing need for supplemental oxygen. My pulse ox on room air was 92 which is just "OK". The doctor wants me to have another overnight sleep study done. My study will be in 2 weeks and I have been told to stay on the oxygen until the study is over with and the results have been studied. I am just hoping that I do not need a CPAP or Bi-PAP. After the appointment I went shopping and killed some time and some cash! I think I was born to shop! :D

My day was good. I had a few unusual spikes but I apparently ate a large amt of carbs for lunch. I had no idea a Wendy's spicy chicken sandwich was so carby! I looked it up and it was 55 or so carbs. Ouch. So that explained that spike. But today we had the exterminator come and spray our family room and my parents bedroom for fleas. Apparently our dog is bringing them in. 2 months ago i was being bitten and even earlier than that but bentley was on a topical flea medication I think... Not sure why he brought them in and they didn't die on him but apparently the jumped on us and fed to their hearts content. ICKY! So we had to be out of the house for 4 hours to let the spray dry. That was frustrating because my dog doesn't like being in the car and our poor elderly cat had to be in a cage in the garage. Poor thing was terrified. I found her laying underneath the cat bed in there huddled up sleeping when we returned. I thought she had died or something because she wasn't responding to me saying her name and opening teh cage door. It scared me. But she was just asleep. Thank goodness.

Other than that, my day went peachy! :p

I had a good day. Very quiet. Blood glucose was really good all day. The Metformin is behaving well. It was a beautiful day here in Central Ohio!
