I am, by no means, saying that people have diabetes just because they eat sweets. I'm sorry if that's what people thought that it was what I meant.
I just meant to say that eating sweets doesn't help prevent it either, especially if someone, like my girlfiend, is prone to get it due to family history.
it's sad to hear that it's not my business when all I'm trying to do is care for someone i love...
But sure I'll start working on a healthier diet myself.

Eating sweets has exactly nothing to do with it unless she's already diabetic. A person who isn't diabetic can eat all the chocolate, sugar, and carbohydrate she wants and her pancreas will provide exactly the amount of insulin she needs at exactly the instant she needs it. Apparently she has already seen a doctor, and now the ball is in her court.

Gary? Perhaps YOU should spend a few days reading Blood Sugar 101 and learning about this disorder. You seem to want to control her situation and there's nothing I can do to stop you, but at least if you study Blood Sugar 101, you'll know the facts, and won't be spreading more propaganda about it.

And for the record, I didn't suggest a 'healthier diet'. What I specifically suggested was low-carb/high-fat, because that is the only way-of-eating that will lower her blood sugar.

I don't mean to pile on, but in my experience, more harm has been done by people who were "only trying to help" than those who left people alone.

While it is true that eating too many of the wrong things can make existing matters worse -- it does not cause the problems to begin with!

(Lots of us were never really into sweets.)

Unfortunately, we know little about how to detect the tendency to develop metabolic orders early on ... and even less about how to prevent disorders. We do know that one person's "healthy, reasonable" eating plan is another one's poison.

In my case, yes, I ate junk -- periodically -- but I wasn't all that into it.

I was diagnosed with an advanced case of Type 2 after I'd lost a bunch of weight on a junk-free regime of "healthy whole grains" with plenty of fruit and 100% fruit juices. (Turned out my super-successful weight loss was, alas, yet another symptom of diabetes.)

When your girlfriend puts herself down, perhaps you could try to reassure her that she's not lazy, but something (nameless) is clearly wearing her out.
