Hi all! I have not been diagnosed with diabetes but it runs in my family. I have been feeling bad the last few months. So my mom took a sample from me on her glucose meter. My readings was 295 the first time. She urged me to go to the doctor but now is a hard time for me. Since them my readings have been 212, 165, 185, 395, 365, 324. I do not know if I am diabetic or not. I have blurry vision, shaky, dizzy, thirsty, urinate a lot, and my extremities feel sore. I wanted to go to a site and get some comments and see what you all think. WIll I be okay until I can go to a doctor.

Go to the ER if you cannot get an emergency appointment with your doctor within the next 24 hours. Take the record of your test results. You could take the meter so he can see the actual numbers, and he will be believe you. I hope you eventually see an endocrinologist (diabetes specialist). An endo is much more likely to make the correct diagnosis and prescribe the best treatment. In the meantime you should avoid all foods containing sugar.

The crazy thing is that I eat sweets by spell. I am not a big sweet eater. I have no idea why my levels are so high. All I can think about is my mom, her mother and father and about five of her sisters and brothers are diabetic. Maybe I can not escape my families heredity.

With that many diabetics in your family, you probably have the gene that will cause you to have diabetes. Not eating many sweets would not prevent your having diabetes under those circumstances.

Bread, rice, corn, potatoes, pasta, fruit, and milk are all easily converted to glucose and can give you higher numbers.

I was never a big sweets eater either... but I lived on carbs. My grandmother was diabetic and I take after her in almost every way.

Those numbers are definitely too high and you should seek medical treatment as soon as possible. In addition to cutting out sugar, I'd cut out grains too.

If you are already predisposed, then there may not have been anything you can do to prevent it, but you can control it now that you know.

Good luck!

Good to meet you, Brand . . . please take the advice given by all the others and go to ER as soon as possible. As Richard said, if your doctor can't see you in the next 24 hours - go to ER. You've been running high for several months now and it appears that your readings are going higher as time goes by. There are serious and sometimes immediate consequences of running this high.

As wdmama mentioned, sweets aren't the only things to avoid, because bread, rice, corn, potatoes, pasta, fruit, and milk all contribute heavily to very high blood sugar levels. Until you get medical treatment, please avoid all of these foods. This is not anything you want to ignore any longer - whatever makes it a bad time to see the doc, can't possibly be as important as avoiding DKA.

Please get on the phone and make an apointment ASAP. Those are high bgs. A normal non diabetic has bgs close to 100 or under most of the day. The longer you wait the more damage may be done to your blood vessels. Since diabetes runs in your family I am sure you know about the complications that come from bgs above 140. You need to get on medication and start to test your bg before and after each meal. I think lots of people think you get diabetes from eating sugar. I never ate sugar but I did eat whole grain bread, pasta, brown rice and potatoes and fruit. The worst thing for a diabetic is whole grain cereal. Many of us spike to 250 after eating oatmeal. The hardest thing for me was learning that "healthy foods" were not my friends. Even milk has 12 carbs a cup. Go out and get a carb counting book and start to count your carbs at meals. I can only handle 15 carbs or less at meals. Some can handle more, some less. Use your bg meter to test 2 hours after meals. Ideally you want to be 120-140 or less. For fasting when you wake up you want to be close to 100 or less.

Brand...in case you haven't noticed already, all of these people here on the forum are very caring and highly educated in the ways of diabetes. Please heed their advice and get into a doctor ASAP. You must get these numbers down, especially with the symptoms you are experiencing. When you get your blood sugar under control, with meds or insulin or whatever it takes, most of those symptoms if not all of them may go away. When my bg's were really high I had problems with blurry vision, fatigue, dizziness, and tingling in my hands and feet. I have recently gone on insulin (both basal and bolus) and my numbers are getting better, but are no means under complete control. But, I am learning the ways of low carbing it, and have realized I did not have to give up good tasting foods just because I have diabetes. I do not feel deprived of anything, and have found great substitutions for many of my favorite "grain" products.
Please don't "try" to get in to see a doctor. You must call and tell the scheduler that you need an appointment immediately as you are already having symptoms of diabetic neuropathy and other maladies.
Good Luck and keep us posted here. We really would like to hear what the doc has to say, what they suggest, and what you decide to do. Everyone here can be a great source of information with all things diabetic and low carb/high fat.

Hi Jwags. I went on line and got the instructions for a fasting test. I woke up Sunday morning without eating and did a test. My results were 212. I ate a bowl of rice and waited an hour to test and my results were 398. I tested an hour later and it was 372. Another hour later it was 390. The last hour it was 328.

I tested it tonight and it has went down to 228.

Your numbers are was too high sweetie. You need to be on meds and a strict diet at this point. Please, I urge you to get in with the doctor. You also need to have an HbA1c done as well as a fasting and glucose tolerance test. With the family being high with diabetics, you are most likely diabetic. Please call.

Until you see a doc (and even after you do), don't eat rice! Those are some nasty numbers, which I would have also if I ate it.

My numbers were very high at diagnosis, and I was very sick. I found this forum just as you have, and they whipped me into shape. I stopped eating potatoes, rice, bread, anything sweet, fruit juice, most fruit (this was the last casualty though) - and my numbers came down right away. Yours will too. And you'll feel so much better you'll wonder why you delayed even a day getting to a doc, and starting to get control.

Welcome to the forum. This place surely helped me - hope we can do the same for you.
