Two years ago I was diagnosed with diabetes type 1. Since then I have used insulin without having to carb-count. As of two months ago I have had to start counting my carbs, and now use insulin with everything I eat, as opposed to only the major meals. According to my clinic this happens occasionally, which brings me to my question: why does it happen and does it represent a worsening of my diabetes situation? There was no apparent change to my diet that caused the change in treatment.

Actually I think its quite common. I take insulin with everything I eat...meals, snacks, that little piece of halloween candy I snuck a little while ago.....if I eat it, I take insulin for it :)

Sadly, in some diabetics that are type 1, things progress. If your pancreas was still putting out some of its own insulin...that might have stopped. You might be more insulin resistant nowadays. You made no mention of a basal insulin. That could also need to be increased so that if your pancreas is still putting out insulin, the basal insulin will take care of the small needs and let your pancreas and your bolus injections help take care of the meal needs.

I'm assuming here that your concerns come from what your meter tells you...and that the test strips that you use haven't been compromised.

Maybe you could list all the medications you take, how much, so we can get a better idea of what's going on.

My weakness is Ore-Ida country style hash browns with ketchup. Two pancake-sized patties fried in Canola oil around 8 o'clock at night. Eleventy hundred carbohydrates! I have to shoot 100 units of Lantus directly into my jugular vein to cover it! :D
