Hi all! My name is Mary and I just joined and have a question I have not been able to find an answer to anywhere. Can you point me in the right direction? (BTW, I am pretty inexperienced in using this kind of forum.)

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2009 with an A1C of 10.2 (not overweight and no family history). I was treated with Metformin, Glipizide, Glimeperide, Jardiance, and Kombiglize in various combinations for four years, but could not get A1C below 7.0 for any length of time. I am now on Levemir 20 units am and 10 units pm, along with Novolog before meals, anywhere from 0 to 9 units depending on pre-meal glucose. My last A1C test measured 9.2, up from 7.8 just the previous 6 months. To say my diabetes is uncontrolled (with at least once-a-lows) would be a fair statement.

I have been seriously considering getting a continuous glucose monitor, so that I have some awareness of the direction my blood glucose is heading, and be alerted to this. I have been reading what I can find on the new Eversense CGM, which sounds really good. However I can find no info on where and how it is available here in the US. I have emailed them, but never received a response, and have searched for this info everywhere I can think of on the Internet.

It would be much appreciated if anyone help me with an answer to this question! Thanks so much.

I don't have an answer to your question, but I do have a question for you.

You mentioned all the medications you have tried to control your diabetes, but you never mentioned nutrition. Have you tried any different ways of eating to bring down your numbers?

Your question on diet is a good one for me! I am currently trying to follow a chart of foods that I made up. There are columns for carbs,
glycemic index, protein, calories, and fiber. I list the foods I regularly eat, and others that I find mentioned as good, then try to incorporate those into my current diet. I am trying to hook up with a nutritionist for help. This is not, by any means, my first attempt to improve my diet! I would like a better reference (more foods listed) for the glycemic index column.

I also have kidney disease, chronic idiopathic constipation, and multiple myloma (bone marrow cancer) so am also trying to keep those in consideration as well, when choosing my foods.

you mention that you follow a chart. that sounds great. So how many carbs do you eat in a typical day?

Normally about 170
since you mentioned that your numbers are out of control, I would ask you to consider lowering your carb intake.

If you make that decision, be careful with all the medicine you take because lowering your carb intake can lower your A1C and if you have medicine that will force your A1C lower (like insulin) , you have to adjust your medication to make sure you dont go too low.

The key for most of the people here is lowering your carb intake. I keep mine under 30g a day (like Veejay).

It may be a great device, but being a brand new "World's First" device, I would want to give it more time to see some real results.

I think looking at the foods you eat would be a better next step right now.

Welcome aboard! You have joined this forum where you will find 100's of fellow diabetics who will share their experiences and offer suggestions. I am a 68 year old male who has been dealing with diabetes type II for over 13 years. For a very long while I struggled with getting control of my blood sugars. My doctor and the dietician I was sent to tried adding medications and having me go on a restrictive diet that was low carb, low fat.

When I started to have problems with my feet, I began searching for a better way to deal with my disease. As for that low carb low fat diet, I craved food and carbs until I finally broke down and stopped the diet, I am not good at being hungry. The whole plan did not work for me.

When I found this site, I read and listened to everything I could find. I learned that when eating low carbs you have to 'add' something into your eating to offset the low carbs, otherwise you will get real hungry and crave carbs. The answer offered here was to eat Low Carbs and add High Fats (LCHF)! Now I knew I loved to eat fats, all kind of fats. So I figured this plan was one I could follow....

I began LCHF in April of 2015. It worked, it really worked! After a few days of eating low carbs (I targeted less than 100g per day), I saw an immediate drop in my blood sugars (BS). I also found that eating added fats stopped my hunger and cravings after about 3 weeks it was easy. As far as results...my first A1c was at 5.8...! Since then my A1c has stayed between 6.2 and 5.8, I was able to get off of all drugs except metformin and slow acting insulin, my blood pressure normalized, my Cholesterol numbers are the lowest they have been in years, well below my targeted number, and my weight has now dropped by 70 lbs., as I needed to drop weight.


Bottom line, this LCHF model has improved my overall health and probably saved my life! Give it a try, you will be pleasantly surprised...

OMG! When I read that two of you kept your carb intake under 30 gr I did a double-take. Sounded like a friend who has been on the keto diet for several months. When I was first diagnosed I went to a class that was taught by a diabetes educator and a nutritionist. The nutritionist went to each of us and set up a "carb goal" and how the carbs should be distributed throughout the day. She set my goal at 150 carbs/day, and that is what I have been using as my guide.

I think I will change my goal to 100 and look into the low carb/high fat diet that several folks mentioned.

(Please bear with me. I am only now learning the forum layout and how to reference previous posts, etc.)

When dropping your daily carb intake (150 to 100) youll want to adjust your insulin levels accordingly. Best to check with Dr as i see your taking levemir 30 units basal daily and 1 to 9 units of Novolog before meals. Just be careful you dont take too much insulin for the amount of carbs you eat. Good idea to get a CGM.

As far as the CGM you mentioned, here is more info on the Eversense CGM, see this resource below. It just got approved in July 2018 in US

Same kind of deal with me when I visited the nutritionist a few years ago and told her I don't eat as many carbs as most people as it de-stabilizes my BG levels. She thought I was crazy only taking 70 gr per day which seemed to be the ideal amount for me as a Type 1.

During the time I clued in that less carbs equals less insulin I significantly dropped the amount of insulin I had been taking and yes there were a few hypos along the way but once you have it figured out life tends to get a little bit easier.

Marykman...I too was sent to a 'nutritionist/ dietitian' when I was first diagnosed. First thing I noticed about her was that she was boring to talk to and that she must hate her job to be as lifeless as she was. Second she preached the Low Carb, less than 200/da. (not low) and Low Fat diet. I had already tried that many times, and I always broke down in time as I was hungry and craving carbs all the time....My time with her was a waste of time!

At that time I had no other options, but I came out of that meeting determined to find a better way.....sometime later I found this website and the rest is history.

Eating low carb high fat balanced my hunger and cravings after a few weeks. Not to mention my blood sugars improved within 3-4 days! I initially was worried about eating high fat foods and my Cholesterol, my Dad and his Dad both died from heart problems...so this was scary for me! My doctor also expressed concern and tried to get my on a statin drug.

in the first year I did see my Cholesterol rise a bit, but was still within the safe range. Many on this website told me to stay the course and after about 12 moths, I would see my Cholesterol drop. And to my and my doctors amazement, it did drop around 40pts. My doctor accused my of taking the statin drug he prescribed, but I did not.....now 2 years later, he knows my LCHF lifestyle....did it all....including my loss of 70lbs! Life is good...


Just to be sure, in the Summer of 2016 my wife and I both went in and had a heart scan, and ultra sounds of the arteries and veins in our neck and descending Aorta. This health scan is available and does not cost a ton. We paid $130 each. My wife got a 100% clean report mine was good except they saw a small spot on the back of my heart. To verify what this was my doctor sent me to do a full 'stress test' in the hospital and the results were that my heart and arteries were clear and normal. I was 65 years old, the same age my Grandfather and my Dad had major heart attacks...

Saying I was happy and relieved is an understatement. LCHF works....! I now knew to say the course.....and I sleep very well at night!

Thanks to all of you for posting. I am checking out the Diet Doctor website as well as the diet forum on this site. I see the diet doctor does have some cautions for diabetics, which I am sure you have ruled out for your own cases. When I see that possible side effects can include constipation, I pay very close attention. Having chronic idiopathic constipation, I work extremely hard to avoid that. I am not ruling out a diet that seems to work wonders for many of you; just proceeding cautiously.

Thanks again for your help. I need help in this area very much!

As long as I keep my fats high, I don't have any problem in this area.

Might be late here. Eversense is available in the US. Currently only the 90 day version is available. It has been worn by many people in the US. Some have are on their ninth 90 day sensor! Personally, I have decided to get the new 189 day sensor from Eversense when it becomes available later this year. Only once per day calibration. And it gets more accurate the longer it is with abs calibrated. According to the promise study results on the new 189 day sensor the MARD value at start is 8.5% and at the end is 7.7%. That is quite an improvement. I’m not sure if posting video links is against protocol here. Please let me know if so. I have been reading everything I can get my eyes on for a month or so.

This guy switched from Dexcom and is in his 9th sensor.

More interested in it now, and it has been out for 3 years. Will start looking deeper into it. Missed seeing they have a semi annual sensor and are working on one for a year.
