If you mean a low-carb, higher protein/fat diet, yes, it can work well. It may be hard to stick to over a long period of time though.

This diet sounds like Optifast. This is a great way to shed excessive weight but it can be very dangerous and must be medically supervised. Be careful with this type of diet. Most people have hair loss while on this type of strict diet. You MUST take vitamins while on this diet. There are safer ways to shed excessive weight. If i'm right, this is very similar to the lighterlife diet where you pay a fortune (£70 per week) for packet milk shakes and soups as food replacement.
The idea of this you don't eat food at all, yep you read right, no food. only 3 to 4 packets per day of powder snacks which you mix with water thought your day.
What it does, as your body is depleted of carbs over a couple of days your body goes into a state called ketosis.
Ketones and Ketosis.
When your body breaks down fat it produces Ketones, which provide fuel for your brain, and when you have raised level of Ketones in your body you are in a state of Ketosis. This can leave a bittersweet, " acid-drop" taste in your mouth and sometimes bad breath, same side effect as with the akins diet.
Here is the WARNING, last year there where a number of incidents where people was taken to hospital and there are cases of death. Not sure why, but i do know on this diet they highly recommend you drink loads and loads of water and on one instance a woman died this year due to drinking 2 gallons of cold water in one hour causing her body to completely shut down.
Basicly your body gets energy from 3 places - newly digested food, glycogen and fat stores. The body prefers to grab energy from carbs you have just eaten. When this has gone, it raids your glycogen, a type of sugar in your liver and muscles. Glycogen holds approx four times its weight in weight in water, so once the glycogen is used up in a couple of days on the diet (Ketosis). Here's the trick, when your body used all the glycogen available it will turn to the next available store which is fat. Thats how these diets works.
But, yes but. You must remain in Ketosis, the first few days of Ketosis you will suffer from side effects as headaches and other horrible side effects. You must removed as much carbs from your diet as possible to a very, very low amount and as said before remain low carb to say in Ketosis.
Once you have one meal or eat normally you body will automaticly replace the glycogen taken you straight out of Ketosis and hence to say the weight you lost in your first few days will be put back on as your body stores the lost glycogen.
Phew, hope this helps
