Hello, I have had borderline diabetes for 20 years. I recently have gone over the edge and now have confirmed type 2. I was taking metformin and glyburide to control my sugars, averaging 12-16 each day. My dr threatened to fire me, and said basically if I wanted to die, go ahead. Scared me into changing my eating habits for sure. I can't tolerate metformin, so he put me on victoza. Started at .6 now uhp to 1.2. Weight loss at first was awesome 27 lbs in a month. Now the hunger is back, have gained 2 lbs this week. Very upsetting. I am having a hard time not eating carbs, bread has always taken nausea away for me. Thought bananas would be perfect, now find out too high on glycemic index. *sigh*. so frustrated. I work from my car, not a lot of salad ability.
I would love to correspond with others in similar situations, I am 45ish and trying to do my best. Thanks.

my first 20 pounds wen t good . i think like you it s hard but it has to be done .

welcome Sophiesmom :) yeah it's hard work getting our BGLs under control. You say you work from your car... do you carry a cooler bag or something? You can carry whatever you like if you have a cooler bag or mini eski/cooler. Carry a mixture of everything with you so you're not tempted to get the wrong foods. Also if you are struggling with oral meds it may be worth trialling insulin instead. I'm not sure what the state of your pancreas is? Have you had the diagnostic tests done (aside from HbA1c)? You should have had the C-peptide and the GAD test done which shows your endocrinologist what the state of your pancreas is and whether or not you're producing any antibodies. There are 4 types of diabetes (including the gestational). You could possibly be type 1.5 (aka: LADA) which is often misdiagnosed as type 2. But I guess getting diet and exercise in control will help you. Congrats by the way on your weight loss, that's quite an achievement. :D I'm sure you will find this a great place for support and info. Keep us posted on how you're doing.

Hello, sophiesmom. James is exactly right, it's hard but it has to be done. There has to be an attitude adjustment before there can be progress.

Because carbs will eventually kill us, as you doctor has already pointed out, we must make up our minds to change our way-of-eating - our diet; no more bread, no more bananas, and no more excuses that you can't eat salad in your car. You don't have to eat salad, you just have to build your meals & snacks around protein & fats. You're hungry BECAUSE you keep eating carbs, and it creates cravings for more carbs. So figure out all the meats & cheeses that you like and pack 'em in a cooler to carry in your car while you're working. Get yourself a meter & start testing after you eat and keep those numbers under 7.7 at all times. You'll see - it works & you won't be hungry.

Welcome to the forum, sophiesmom, and congratulations on getting serious about your diabetes. Your weight loss is great, but it was huge for only a month. Mine underwent extreme swings - water weight obviously - when I was dxed. I lost maybe 20 lbs, then 10 days later at the endo I had gained 14 - it was wild. Then I started losing at the rate of a little under 2 lbs/wk and in 3.5 months I've lost 25.

Anyway, my point is that gaining 2 lbs after that big a loss doesn't seem odd. Your body is going through a lot. But yes, you do need to get your carb eating under control.

What is the lowest number of carbs you were eating before your cravings came back? If you severely limit your carbs, you'll lose those cravings or at most they will be completely manageable - happened to me and I was a medal winner for high-carb eating. I'm eating an average of 50 carbs/day and for low-carb that's on the high end.

You might be able to eat more carbs, some can, but it'd be wise to cut your cravings for a while, get your blood sugar where you want it, and then add back in whatever your meter says you can.

There are wonderful recipes in the diet section, and we can find replacements for about anything (well, fruit is a tough one - go for handfuls of berries instead of bananas for sure.)

It took quite a while and during that time I hit lots of plateaus and often regained a few before I started to lose again. I lost weight using different diets but the most successful was Bernsteins low carb diet. Carbs are addictive, so the more you eat the hungrier you get and you want more. Many of us have found baking low carb baked goods a good alternative. This way when we are hungry we can still eat and not have our bg soar. Check out the recipe forum. I don't know enough about Victoza to comment. But I use metformin and eat about 40 carbs per day and my bgs are usually under 100 in the morning and under 110 after meals. So it is possible.

I am a very new type 2 (two weeks ago started my shots) and cant imagine only eating 40 carbs a day!! I thought it was 40 carbs a meal...
I hate this whole eating thing, I would much rather just starve myself but since the doc put me on these shots I get too dizzy and feel like I am starving, starving, starving.

Hello, goofygal. What kind of shots are you taking? There are several diabetes drugs administered by injection, and then of course there are several versions of insulin too.

Glad to have you join us - hope you can visit often.

welcome Goofygal. :) everyone is different and can tolerate different levels of carbs in their diet. If you're on insulin you will probably be eating more carbs than type 2's on no medication would. I'm on insulin myself and I eat carbs with every meal... but I don't eat high fat like others here would. I stick to low GI as my choice of carbs (refer Glycemic Index) and that works for me. It's a case of trial and error to find the right foods for you. That means there is no right or wrong answer (aside from the refined foods) when it comes to food that works for you. If you eat too many carbs it's bad for you, equally if you eat too much fat it's just as bad for you (not great for digestive system as it takes longer to process and can cause problems with liver/gallbladder involved in emulisification process). I'm sure you will find this a great place for support and info. Keep us posted on how you're doing.

Goofygal - I can tell you only of my experience, but shared by many, that when one cuts the carbs out of one's diet, the crazy cravings either are no longer crazy, or no longer there. I have a psychological desire to eat tons of ice cream, but not the get-out-of-my-way cravings that drove me to do it.

I went to the store and bought a bigger cooler, ice packs should allow me to pack what I need. Thanks for the nice comments nice to know not alone

SO I bought ceasar salad, no croutons, 1tsp dressing, no cheese, and sliced up len roast beef. I had hard boiled egg for breakfast(missed my banana) and about 1/3 english cuke. wow was I full. Ate at 1130, now 4pm still not hungry. and NO bread!!:D

That's how to do it! You are doing very well and in a few days you'll find you have no cravings...ketosis sets in and kills a lot of your cravings. It's truly a 'magic bullet' for me. Now, I'm having to stay in it AND eat enough not to lose more weight!

You are gonna do great and get in control of your body soon if you keep up the good attitude!

I have personally found a wealth of support and information here that I am very appreciative for.

I hear ya on the food thing... I have struggled with it but finally found something that works for me.... perhaps some of these things might help you out too....

!. I never eat anything I don't like. There is no way I am going to force myself to eat a salad when I'm not particularly keen on salad... won't like it I will resent it so the first step was finding foods that work for me.

2. Nuts. OMG nuts have been my saving grace. Pistachio nuts are wonderful because they have salt and crunch too and little shells :) but I always carry them in my handbag and in the car...and I have always avoided them thinking that the fat count will go through the roof but it hasn't happened yet! You don't eat as many as you think you will.

3. I don't limit my food quantities. If I am hungry I will eat until I am not hungry...now before I started eating low carb...to stop me feeling hungry I ate bags of potato chips, tonnes of burgers...what I realise now is that I was eating to feel stuffed full and up my blood sugar levels. Even though I don't limit food quantities and eat things like nuts, cheese, cream and bacon...I'll be lucky to take in 1000 calories a day at the moment and believe me when I tell you have NO CRAVINGS for chips, bread etc....(this from a woman who used to find it hard to make it through the day with no potato chips).

4. I don't even have a little bit of bread, potato, pumpkin, corn.... It's just off the menu if I have a bit...my bloods will spike and the cravings will start again...

5. Finger food is a great idea....Ham with grated cheese rolled up, I eat an apple a day in quarters over the day so as not to spike my bloods, nuts, cheese crisps, tried pork rinds (not really for me but some people love 'em), homemade quiches...all easy stuff to eat in the car and on the run.

6. and prob the most important tip I could give you.... Diabetes is a SILENT disease, therefore many people find it hard to prioritise their self care, including menu planning. It is so important that you set aside time to menu plan and to pack your food and keep track of things. You would do it for someone you love, you need to do it for you too :)

I'm sure you're going to do just fine :) The first step is always the hardest and you've done that!!

I have to say you are lucky to have the doctor that you have. A lot of us, our doctors act like diabetes is no big deal. For him to tell you the truth the way he did, you should send him a thank you card - seriously!

You can do it, but you have to start by getting any sugar and unnatural carbs out of your life. Eat very low carb - I do 20-25 a day - and you'll soon see results that'll make you and your doc happy! :D

Great post, Tiggy! And I agree with everything you said - one former carb addict to another. In the beginning I was sooooo hungry all the time eating low carb, I thought there was no way on earth I could eat this way forever. Now, two months later, my body's adjusted to the sudden change and now I don't feel hungry AT ALL and I no longer crave any of the bad stuff I used to eat. :D

I was so impressed by what cutting carbs have done for me I have done it for my husband too :)

He's only been on it for one day but it already noticing the difference!
