Hi,

Is there anyone on here who still mixes insulin for their child's subcutaneous injections? I mix Humalog and lantus each night to minimize the pokes for my son. I have heard conflicting things about mixing. I've spoken with 2 endo's (one was the director of the whole hospital endo staff) and they seem fine with it. Just wondering what others have experienced.

I seem to remember doing this When Lily was first diagnosed, and I think it worked all right. Always need to draw up the Humolog first, is my recollection.

Yes, I went through 4 needles the other night....drew too much Lantus and had to start all over. I guess I was too exhausted.

I don't use Lantus (I'm on Humulin N), but that's actually the way I was taught to prep my doses.

The rule is to always start with the bolus (Humalog), then add the basal (Humulin N). This prevents the long-lasting basal from contaminating the shorter-term bolus insulin.

Hopefully some Lantus users will join us with more Lantus-specific information.

Yes, it's the same procedure here. Carter was on all three insulin's right out of the hospital, the endo actually just pulled the NPH out of rotation 2 weeks ago. So I was mixing Humalog, Humalin in the morning and Humalog, Lantus in the evening. I liked it because it meant I was only giving two shots a day. Now I'm giving him 3-4 shots a day, and his numbers have been really high. :/

Hi Carter's Mom... When my son (he's 13) was diagnosed, they started him right away with Humalog for meals (3) and Lantus for bedtime. So far, I've had to adjust his insulin doses once every 5-6 days. When the weather warms a little, I have to lower it by 1 unit. The diabetic nurse taught me that if he has 2 days in a row with a low mid-morning, lower the morning bolus by 10% and same goes for the other 2 blouses. If he wakes up with low numbers ( below 4) lessen his basal another 10%. But don't adjust until you have 2 days in a row same bg readings. The reverse for when the bg readings are higher. You add 10% of the dose. I hope you can understand my jabberings!LOL

Yes I understood what you wrote, I am actually going to ask the doctor if I should be mixing the Lantus with the Humalog. I read on the bottle that Lantus shouldn't be mixed with anything. Now I have had two endo's tell me to mix it to eliminate an extra poke for him. Some days I would rather the extra poke, measuring the two is frustrating at times. I also have been adjusting his insulin amounts about every 3 days. I wonder if there will ever be a day when things will stabilize for a bit. Thanks for your comment!

When I was taking Lantus, I was told not to mix it with any other insulins as it might not work as intended.

I don't get the point of mixing. Is it to have less pokes? Is this such a problem for a 13 yo?
