Hi All,
I have a 14 year old son who was diagnosed with type 1 approx 18 mths ago. He has struggled since then in keeping his blood levels correct.
He misses insulin doses, eats without taking insulin and basically I cant get him to understand that he needs to look after himself.
For a number of weeks now he has been having recurring High readings on his blood moinitor but today seems very unwell.
He has been in bed all day, he seems drowsey, dry smelling mouth. I cant get him to test his blood or visit the hospital.
What would you advise?

Thanks

Call NHS Direct to get advice from them 0845 4647.
Failing that call your doctor or an ambulance. Better safe than sorry.
Good luck :)

Doesn't your son know about the complications that can occur if he continues to ignore his diabetes? I have been type 1 for 65 years, and am very healthy, but I Take very good care of myself. I know I would not be here today if I did not practice good diabetes management. Your son may need a counselor. Many teens with type 1 start off being in denial, and ignore their diabetes.

There is another site that was created for parents of diabetic children, including teens. Here is the link:

Good luck to you and your son!
