About a month after I was diagnosed I saw my old bike hanging in the rafters of the garage. The bike had been there for nine years. It is an old Trek 820 Mountain Bike that is a heavy old beast. When I started riding it I had all I could do to go a quarter of a mile. Each time I rode I did more and more miles. I also found that during the times I rode my bike when I rode for time/distance that my BS. Eating Shot Bloks as I rode kept my BS's down. All part of many tests to find this out. So as I said in another thread I am going to go back to testing more. But everyday time I took the bike out and rode just a little bit longer of a distance. My longest trip was September 25th while visiting my inlaws out in North Dakota. I am not the fastest but was able to maintain a good average especially when I was faced with a 20 mph wind. Here is a link to that trip it ended up being 71 miles. I have had a bunch over 40 miles and a 62 that I did also. I love riding bike as it is not hard on the body and I can go long distances and keeping my heart rate down at a good level around 130. Can't wait for spring.

Trip

Since it is too cold out to ride now I have been doing spinning classes at a local health club and a couple days ago I started a program called Couch to 5K which is a nine week course to running a 5K with good times.

might want to check the sprint triathlon plan at trinewbies.com. i'm just saying :)

I have an inspirational friend that does triathlons. He travels all over the States doing triathlons and does well. Me, I swim like a rock. :( And even with biking and running I am not fast by any means. Most people on a 70 mile bike ride do 22 mph average. I know having the old heavy Trek bike slows you down some but I ride just to ride.

Murph, I wish I could do some biking, but I have a bad knee that gives me problems when I do.

I have joined an athletic club. They have dozens of machines that strengthen various body muscles. I am 71 now, and I have weakened muscles. Age and nerve damage from long term diabetes. I love working out 3 days per week. I have a treadmill at home for the other days.

Richard have you tried wearing one of them elastic braces while riding? Don't know if that would help or not but just a thought. I think more important than anything is that you are doing something.
