Hello everyone! I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and I really hate it. What's even worse is, I knew it was coming, have known it since I was about 12, and I just let it happen. ARRRGH! I'm having a really hard time not flogging myself repeatedly with a large fish because of this. I'm also a depressive, so for me, it's just been an enormously fun time, I'll tell ya.

Anyway, I'm an almost-40 year old SAHM of two daughters, one getting ready to start Kindergarten, and the other is 3.5. Yeah, I started late. :D I have to get this under control, for them and for my husband, if not for me. I know I should want to do this for me, but with the depression issues...well, it's too long of a story to go into here. Suffice it to say, I'm trying to follow the correct diet and get more exercise so I'll be around long enough to see my kids graduate high school, then college and get married and have kids, or whatever else the want to do. So here I am. sigh

Love and strength vibes to all out there that are struggling!

HiYa PW:

It's Good to meet you here. Geez, I'm sorry that you are in this situation
but at the same time I'm still grinning about the fish. As you know, you are far from alone about this Diabetes diagnosis, and especially Type 2 with the carb problem. It is even harder when you have llittle Kids since most People have grown up as sweets(carbs) being used as a reward.

I remember asking my Dr. for pep pills when my Kids were young and he said with the diseases I had, pep pills wouldn't help at all. At least the Prozac is working for you some. A Lady I know of, is on Prozac and it's hard to believe the difference it makes in her depression.

Well, the first thing you must do is stop blaming/beating yourself up about having Diabetes. It is not helping at all. It is only adding to your depression which makes you crave the things(carbs)that are bad for you in larger quantities. More and more studies are showing that many Type 2's are predisposed to getting Diabetes.

I know you love your Kids(cuz they are the Best ;) ) but you must get ahead of this disease for you first...and you are Well worth the work it takes and the rewards of the work.

Do you get your own groceries? If so, have someone else pick them up. Of course, don't shop for food when it's close to a meal time or if your sugar feels low. I was wondering if it is possible for you to make a more conservative list of carbs while you are away from the store. Perhaps remove two carbs each time that you write a list and add something low carb instead. Also suger-free puddings/jello's/frozen treats, etc The Kids won't know the difference.

As you know, any kind of movement is better than nothing, even shuffling. When you are feeling more upbeat you would probably feel like being more active. Even putting fast music on and dancing(my favourite)...with your little Ones. Or going outside with them in the back yard and swinging them around...while trying to keep your balance of course. :D There are so many other things to do.

It's also important to keep your Doctors and Dietician's appointments and to get the results of your tests so you can discuss the Good area to be in so you know what your goals are.

Here is a Good site if you don't already have it:

Carb Counter
Love and strength back at you. Sweet photo of you. :)

Thanks for the welcome, Terrie! It gave me the warm fuzzies. :D Normally, I'm pretty upbeat, and even goofy, but when I posted that, I was so bummed. Whenever I think of not having the things I love whenever I want, I get all weepy. ;)

Thanks for the carb counter link! Bookmarked that sucker, I'll tell ya! LOL

I do all the shopping because DH will come home with nothing BUT carbs. And he'll spend twice the money for half the amount of stuff. He tries, I'll give him that, but he's worse than I am! He's forever coming home with peanut M&Ms for the girls. Why not just cut my feet off NOW, honey? :p I've really tried to not use sweets, or any kind of food really, as rewards for the kids. My older daughter already shows all the signs of carbaholism, and I'm afraid for her. Trying like heck to get her NOT to turn into me. hehe

I started out on Prozac, but I've graduated to Effexor. EffexorWoman just doesn't have the same ring to it though, KWIM? :D But yeah, thank whomever-one-worships for antidepressants! I'm practically human on them! LOL They haven't been working very well lately though, but I'm not sure if that's due to stress, the high blood sugars, my children, or perimenopause. Probably a combo of all of the above, and no good chocolate to fall back on. I like the SF stuff too, but I tend to eat too much of it at a sitting, and....well....you know what happens then. ;)

I have a sweet photo? LOL!! That's a first. heehee And as for my avatar, well, I have a thing for hot peppers. Not eating them, just growing them and collecting pepper decorations. I'm funny that way. In alot of ways, really... (hence the fish comment) But I'm feeling alot better today than last night, so I'm ready to go out into the forum and start perusing! Thanks so much for the support. I really needed it. :)

Hey your Welcome PW, don't mention it. TY! You made me laugh. I needed that. Ya, when I was on the antidepressants, I didn't find they helped much. Just made me more tired. Of course, I was on a weaker one.

In my case, it wasn't the Diabetes that depressed me it was the severe RA PLUS the overwhelming job of raising Kids and all the work that goes with it(although I love them, Glad I had them), plus the social aspect and all that has to be thought of and done, when you'd rather crawl in a hole with a blankey. :D

BUT it does get better although you have to get that Diabetes under control....and your Hubby. ;) Mine loves his carbs also but I spend the money. That's another part of my endless job. He tries to leave me at home whenever possible. Saves him money. :D

The high blood sugars and perimenopause(you're having that a bit early) are probably part of your problem. Stress raises most Diabetics blood sugar, as you know. So if possible, you need someone to look after your Kids...and your Hubby....and mine...please....for a day, if possible. Ha! Yes, I cut my portions of food down a long time ago. Helps a lot.

Oh and try not to look at the junk they sell around the cash area. Just make a face, take a deep breath and say, "I don't want your junk. It's Bad for me and expensive". Read a magazine while waiting at the cash, if you must. It would be Good if you could say "No" to your Kids sometimes when it comes to junk food. Buy them a cheap toy or a book instead, if you want. I know it's hard.

Thanks a bunch! Now I have to find out what the word perusing means.

Hello Prozacwoman, Welcome to DF.
I would know how you feel as we all crave carbs and it's the carbs that's our enemy. Other than the antidepressants drugs that you are on, Is there something that you take for the diabetes?

As you get to a certain control you will find that saying no will become easier :)

Hi Anthill! Yes, I take metformin, and also Mycardis for blood pressure and simvastatin (sp?) for cholesterol.

Those stinkin' carbs. I swear, I pass by the candy aisle, and if I'm already in a questionable mood, I'll actually start to tear up. Talk about emotional! LOL But I've been doing pretty good for the past few days, food-wise. This is all still really new to me, even though I've been expecting it. Just call me Cleopatra...Queen of Denial. snicker
