Hello my name is Tom and joined to gain knowledge about diagnosing diabetes. Not sure if I'm a diabetic or not. I recently tried to participate in a medical study and was informed my glucose level was too high (fasting 115) to participate and I should consult my physician. Is that something to be alarmed about? I'm 53 but not overweight (5' 11" 175lbs). Thank you:smile:

Hello Tom, welcome to our community! Your numbers are not bad but they should be watched very closely. You may be a "prediabetic", but you need a doctor to make a diagnosis. An endocrinologist (diabetes specialist) is the best choice for a correct diagnosis and treatment, if needed. I think you should watch how mant carbohydrates you eat. I limit myself to 130g per day. All carbs eaten will raise your blood sugar. Exercise on a daily basis will help keep the blood sugar lower. Diet and exercise should keep your numbers low enough that you may not need any medications.

I think you should buy yourself a glucometer for testing your blood sugar at home. The Relion meter at Walmart costs about $9 and the box of 50 test strips is about $20. That is less than half the cost of a name brand meter and strips. Testing in the morning before breakfast and two hours after one meal each day would be good times for testing. If you do this for a few days, let us know what your numbers were.

Thank you Richard, you already answered my next question. I'll take a look at the Relion meter this afternoon.

Good to meet you, Tom. Thank you for joining us. Richard's advice is right on - I use the ReliOn meter myself and it does the job. I also limit my carbs intake. My exercising isn't what it should be, but it's better than it was! :p

Do keep us posted as you continue with this . . . we'll look forward to hearing more from you.

take care,

Thanks Shanny, should have mentoned my father had diabetes but didn't take care of himself and eventually died from it. I'm unemployed right now or I would go to my doctor pronto but with no health insurance I'm more or less my own doctor. Checked my local Walmart and found the meter and strips Richard mentioned. I'll have to wait till next week to purchase...thanks again
