Hi All,

First let me say that I am grateful to have found this forum! Forgive me if my message is not in the right catagory.

Yesterday I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. I am an overweight, 55 year old female. I have not had any of the symptoms listed and although I am not surprised that I have diabetes, I am surprised at how severe a situation that the Dr. is stating that I am in.

He said that my glucose was nearly 300 and that I should eat NOTHING but fish, skinless chicken breast and green vegetables.
I have an appointment to see him to be given medication, next week.

I have been scouring the internet since the diagnosis, (sometimes a bad thing, I know!) but I am finding nothing that matches up with what my Dr. is recommending that I eat.

I do know that I am not in good shape, and had decided to make a lifestyle change, so I am not upset that I will 'have' to do so! But, I can't imagine that my personal nutritional restrictions can be valid, considering it seems that everything I have read shows that diabetics can eat a variety of foods...can't they???

He said, NO fruit, no dairy, no bread, no meat beyond fish and chicken....nothing else. Period. I tend to not eat most of the day, so I am guessing that I should be not doing that anymore, but a piece of fish for breakfast sounds horrid right now! LOL!

He said to walk a half hour a day, but what I have read it says to not exercise until your numbers are lower than 300, but how much lower?

If you guys have any 'newbie guidelines' type websites to point me towards, I would be really grateful!

Fish for breakfast. Yum! I think that your Dr. is giving these foods as examples. Oh true. Most things dairy products have sugar/carbs in them. Don't forget that most Diabetics are on medications that's why they can eat more variety. The other ones do diet and exercise. Others do low carb diets and exercise. I do mainly small portion about 4-5 small snacks, exercise and Insulin.

Your sugar could go higher. You don't know how long you have had high sugars since you had no symptoms. It could have been for some time. High sugars are dangerous and damaging. I heard that a Person shouldn't do hard exercise like jogging, until they are about 240. Some People differ. Walking for 30 minutes is not hard exercise. Do you have a meter?

cottage cheese-2 tablespoons, romaine lettuce, mini carrots, radishes, green peppers, onions, red,yellow pepers, mushrooms, cucumbers, celery sticks, apples, easier salads with pieces of boiled eggs, pieces of grilled chicken or fish, mushrooms, etc. black tea, water. (Olive oil for frying meat).

He is worried about you for Good reason. It is probably only until you get your medication. Better ask him about the cottage cheese. since he said NO dairy. A beginners diet has stuff in it that he doesn't want you eating.

Yes, that sounds right. How overweight are you?

You don't really need the symptoms to have diabetes. Mine was found by accident when I went in for a routine physical. They said "oh, your diabetic" I said no I'm not, and they said "yes you are", and that was 24 or 25 years ago.

If your doctor says it's severe, then believe it, diabetes can, and will kill you if not taken care of. I'm sorry, but that's what my doctor told me 24 or 25 years ago.

A BG reading of 300, is way up there, and in the coma range, normal is somewhere between 70 - 120, so listen to your doctor. Did he do blood tests to get your A1c, that's a 90 day average of your blood glucose levels.

The diet that he put on sounds like a low carb. with some protein, to bring down your BG.

If your not in good shape, you will be.

Diabetics can eat a lot of stuff, on the proper medication. But not everything. Yes, you will be able to eat a variety of foods, but in moderation. You will be making a lifestyle change.

Those are high in sugars, and carbs, except the meat. You have to train yourself to eat 3 meals a day, plus snacks.

Once you bring your BG down, you'll be able to eat a regular breakfast. I eat 2 eggs, 1 piece of bacon, and 2 frozen waffles, with sugar free syrup, and coffee.

Exercise is good for diabetes, so if your doctor says to walk, then walk.

I visit 4 or 5 boards, but this one the most, so stay here. Between your doctor, and this board, you'll be OK.

I'm sorry to hear that you have become diabetic. I found out I was diabetic in March after a routine blood test turned up a fasting glucose level of over 300! Like you I'm struggling with the condition and somedays I do better then others.

Do your best to get it under control. I made a decision that I would make the change gradually so that I could find a diet that I could live with. It's not that bad when I remind myself that I'm eating the way I always should have. Hang in there it's not as bad as it seems right now.
