I am 74 and I have had diabetes for about 5 years and have not been too successful at managing it. Had a hard time losing weight which is essential even having a fairly good Mediterranean diet and usually only sugar free desserts. I was only able to maintain my weight or kept losing and gaining the same 10 lbs. I came here to see if IF was ok for diabetics and found some good threads in support of it. It works for me and not eating after 6pm was not difficult for me and I rarely ate breakfast before 10 anyway. I also found the discipline helped me through the day by not thinking of snacking or just having fruit. I am making healthier choices all the time now especially with my BG being so low each morning. Even if I occasionally have a big mac attack I have it for lunch or non diabetic dessert early in the afternoon. I'm sure it raised my BG but by morning my number was 110 which I attribute to the 16 hr. fast. The benefits I see in just 3 weeks is more vitality, swelling and pain due to arthritis around my knuckles is much less, my skin looks clearer, I lost 7 pounds. Cravings are subsiding. Just a general feeling of well-being and really thinking that I can finally get this all under control with IF. My goals are to lose 50 lbs, and get off Metformin, BP med and astorvastatin if I can which were prescribed due to diabetes.
Nice to meet you all!

Welcome ThisMrsD! I know we've had some posters here who really benefited from IF; looks like you're doing well with it, too! I hope you stick around and post some more.

Hi MrsD, welcome to the forum and congrats on recent accomplishments.

IF seems to work for me as well when I stick to it. It is easy to do, I did it for about a year working rotating 12 hour shifts before I retired and never skipped a day on my version. I would only eat dinner when I was working days or off, I ate when I got up when working graveyard. I did do a slight cheat though, I would have coffee every day when I got up, it was a version of bullet proof coffee, 500-600 kcal a cup.

Sounds like you should be able to meet your goals.

Just curious, the BP med and statin were prescribed just because you were diabetic?

That was a rough schedule for IF but it does seem to work if u stick to it. When I first learned about IF it said I could have coffee or tea with no milk during fasting periods so maybe it didnt harm you.

My cholesterol and BP were borderline high even before I got diabetes. then the doctor said there is a higher chance of stroke and heart disease now so he wanted to get those under control too. I hope to get off them if the IF keeps working for me. I will keep posting.

Wishing you good luck, but if you stick to it, the outcome will be good and it won't be luck.

I still IF, just not as often. Been wanting to try a 24-36 hour water only fast but just haven't been too motivated to hit the start button.

MBuster, I am not new to fasting and my husband and I often did a 36 hr water only fast. B/C of the diabetes I am really liking the 16:8 iF then on sunday I do a 24 hr starting at 5pm till Monday at 5pm. Monday morning I finish my exercise early bc I know I will feel weak later. Then I rest most of Monday till 5.
If u decide to do a 36 hr fast, I recommend to start eating with an orange and a little later a raw salad. If u eat fat or oil after not eating 36 hrs. U will pay for it :(
You may know this already lol but since u said u would like to try one thought I would add that warning :)

Thank you, I appreciate all the advice I can get. I may have to give it a shot.

I was not aware of the issue with fats after fasting. My normal diet is keto, with calories coming from 70% fats, 20% proteins and 10% carbs, +/- 5%. I rarely eat fruit, and then it is usually berries, so I may have to find a work around.

Looks like your doing very well I have had type 2 diabetes since I was 43 and I’m 55 now. I eat mostly veggies and I have one Diet soda once a week I call my splurg day. For a few years I was not taking care of myself A1 was 6.7 then went up to 10.4 I have since changed meds and now A1C is about 8 now that I’ve changed what I eat. Welcome to the group and I hope things go better for you.

A1C issues. Trying to get this A1C down. I am eating much better my doctor is seeing me every other month right now to try and control it. I’m on a new medication called Ozempic it seems to be dropping my sugar levels as I can feel my levels going low. I will discuss this with him on the next doctors visit.
