welcome Joregan :) Waiting for test results isn't easy huh. Whatever the result you can still live life to the full... you just need to have a positive attitude. If it turns out you're diabetic, it can be managed... don't let it manage you. Make sure you have a good medical team behind you... and don't be afraid to ask lots of questions as knowledge is power. With diabetes most of us are all different... but generally lower carb intake using wholegrain foods works best. Our developed world eats way too much refined carb (anything white)... so it's no wonder people don't feel so good. The occasional refined carb is Ok... but we're not supposed to be living on the stuff. Whatever the result... I'm sure you will be pointed in the right direction and given lots of assistance. This forum is good for support, etc. too... lots of experience here with people that have a clue about it. One thing you may find confusing though is that diet is slightly different for most of us as we're all different in our makeup.... but we base our decision on what our glucometers tell us after we've eaten.... so we learn what foods are best for us and what just doesn't work. Look foward to hearing your experiences.

Hello & welcome, Jo. My diabetes was caught in a routine checkup, so I hadn't developed noticable symptoms yet & can't really tell you what is typical. What I DO know is as Mep says - it isn't the end of the world and it can be controlled just about however tightly you decide to control it!

Again, avoid the white foods - pasta, bread, potatoes, rice, etc. - and try to stick with whole foods as near to their original as possible.

We're glad to have you with us - thank you for joining us! Do take care and we hope to see you often!

:welcome:

Hi and welcome to DF. What you may be experiencing is some of the signs of insulin resistance. A lot of us when we eat carbs, our pancreas puts out way too much insulin to push glucose into cells. Our cells don't recognise the insulin and our pancreas cranks out more insulin. All this insulin sometimes hits our system at once crashing our bgs, making us feel sick. It is the speed of the crash that does this, even though your bgs are still high.

Insulin resistance is the hallmark of type 2 diabetes, so it's more a semantics issue that a medical one. WhatEVER your doc calls it, you'd be wise to treat it like diabetes and reduce your carbs & start using a glucose meter. You didn't give a number, but when your doc said your blood sugar was "very high" . . . those levels just don't happen to non-diabetic persons.

I think you'll discover that getting your blood sugars down & stabilized will also help your lipids issues. Are you on a statin drug to control your cholesterol?

docs love using the word "insulin resistance" too. I've been labelled as having "metabolic syndrome" by my GP and my endo. This is because I have a few of the so called contributing factors (including another hormonal condition). So with me they had me on oral meds when they discovered diet and exercise wasn't working.... now I was doing 1-2 hours everyday of exercise. Most days I was doing weights & cardio in the morning, then another hour after work of cardio.... but my BGLs were still not going down (nor was my weight really which was frustrating). This is when I got that label above... then my med dosages kept getting increased and mixed with other drugs, etc. Finally they discovered I'm actually not producing enough insulin only about a year ago. In my mind I'm wondering whether I was ever insulin resistant as such... perhaps just didn't have enough insulin the whole time I was having troubles. It's such a tricky thing to figure out as everyone is so different. Just don't be afraid to ask questions. If something isn't working for you... find out why. I find docs just try and keep you on a type of drug sometimes because apparently it's supposed to work, etc... but you know for yourself if it's working or not.

Hello and welcome to the forum! You said that your blood sugar was over 300? In my opinion, your doctor should confirm your diagnosis and you need to get a meter and start testing. If you are put on medications will be decided now or maybe later. I was diagnosed during a routine exam and I don't remember having any symptoms. When you get your meter, you will be able to test and see what your blood glucose is when you feel dizzy, write this down and keep track of what you are eating. I hope you will visit often and take care!

I got a testing kit today , i tested when i didn't feel great which was 2 hours after breakfast , i got a reading of 91.5 , then later i tested 2 hours after eating my dinner it was 113 , as far as i know these readings are pretty ok for someone after eating . Could it be possible that im not diabetic ,can a tummy bug push blood sugar levels up .

hi Joregan - yes, they are very good numbers as docs expect after meal numbers to be up to 144 (8) or more... here they advise anything below 10 (180) after a meal is good... if you go over then it's not good. But of course the lower BGL you have the better... as long as it's not too low and within normal range. Have you tested yourself before eating in the morning? If not, give it a try and get into habit of doing that as this is the figure that docs look for the most to diagnose you. This figure gives them a good idea what your basal insulin is in your body... if too high for example they know something going wrong with your insulin... if normal and during the day if you get higher figures it could be due to type of food you are consuming, etc. TEST, TEST, TEST and record your readings for info for you & your medical team. In answer to your question about whether BGLs go up if you have a tummy bug... yes most likely as body stressed... they can swing either too high or too low if you're diabetic. I've had this experience a lot myself due to regular illness. Make sure you get a proper diagnosis from your medical team though. Where I live that diagnosis has to come from an endocrinologist (specialist doc) and they then advise of outcome and treatment to my usual doc... but I basically have to see both my usual doc (GP aka: primary in USA) and my endo on ongoing basis. I'm not really sure if BGLs swing in a person without diabetes when they're sick? it's possible I guess. :D

Those are good readings for two hours after eating, but they aren't non-diabetic. If you're looking for real proof whether you're diabetic, test ONE hour after eating. That one will tell you how high you went before you started dropping back down. Waiting for two hours after eating tells you nothing unless you also test BEFORE you start eating, and again at the ONE HOUR interval. By taking the three tests you know where you started, how high that specific food spiked you, and if you're dropping back to your starting place after two hours, as you should be.

You need to test before you eat so you know what kind of spike that you got from your meal. Follow Shanny's advice on testing. You seem to want someone to tell you that you don't have diabetes, but you tested above 300 and that is a good indication that you have diabetes. Try and not put up a big fight. Accept the fact that you have a really good chance of getting the diagnosis. Put all of that energy into getting yourself in a good mind set to live the rest of your life eating "different" and controlling your diabetes, you will be OK. No tummy bug would push your blood sugar levels to 300.
