Went to the Dr.'s for my on going Lipid/LDL blood work checkup. He asked me his standard set of questions.. plus a few more. I guess some of the answers he didn't like, so he had some sugar tests (?) done on me via the above blood work. The results he got back were..

"Is there such a thing as having a number soo astronomically high that it doesn't even exist!?" :faint:

Anyways, I find out I'm type 2.. and as of yesterday I'm now a new owner of a "Bayer Breeze 2" meter. Thank God the kit came with.. (and I can use), the "Microlet 2" lancing device. When it comes to needles.. I don't like them, but I have to admit that it's very painless using it.

He's put me on "Metformin 500mg tabs" twice a day, along with checking my Glucose twice daily also.

Well, I guess that's it from this side of the computer.

Welcome to the diabetes world! This is a great forum, you can ask anything and get some real hands on info. I have type 2 diabetes also. I just bought a Breeze 2 meter. I wanted a meter that had the test strips on a disk to keep in my purse. I never have a place to put the used test strips-yuk. I tried Metformin when I was diagnosed, it made me sick to my stomach so I switched to Glucotrol. That was 10 years ago and now I am on insulin and Actos & Glucotrol. I am still trying to get my rapid acting insulin dose to match my carbs. I have gastroparesis and my food doesn't always digest quickly. I just had a low about an hour ago. My sugar went down to 37. I had to take 8 glucose tablets to get my blood sugar up to 65. I thought I injected the right amount of insulin at dinner, I guess not. Oh well, hopefully you will never need insulin. It is not the end of the world if you need to take it. Becky

Becky, do you use carb counting? I take one unit of fast acting insulin for every 6 carbs I eat. Other diabetics take 1 unit for every 15 carbs, or for every 10, etc. It differs from one person to another. Trial and error could help you decide what the best amount is for you. It is called a "carb ratio". You can research carb counting and carb ratio on Google and learn more detail. That helped me very much. Ido that before every meal and snack.
Yes, I count carbs every meal. I need 1 unit of insulin for 5 carbs. There are some days when it seems like I don't need as much insulin. There is really no explanation for it. I just blame it on the gastroparesis. I take erythromycin to help speed the digestion process. Reglan is the best medication for gastroparesis but I can't tolerate the side effects. My hands and feet jerk if I take that medication. There are only a few treatments for gastroparesis. If you know anything about gastroparesis, please let me know. There is limited information on it. I have searched everywhere. I have a medication called "Motilium". I had to order it from New Zealand. My doctor is looking into the safe use of it. The FDA has never approved it for the US. I take so much medication that I want to steer clear of any interactions.

There are many people with gastroparesis. It is rather common among diabetics. i don't know much about it or the nedications. there are doctors who are specialists on gastronomical problems. Maybe your doctor or a friend will give you a referral.

I have been to 3 gastroenterologists. I have had 3 gastric emptying scans, all scans showed that after 6 hours, I had only digested 1/2 of my food. I have talked to 3 diabetes educators & 2 dieticians about my gastroparesis and they all tell me to try and find a specialist. I quit trying to find someone to help. Sometimes you just have to accept things the way they are and make the best of it.
Welcome aboard, Breeze. Sorry to hear you've joined the diabetes club, but glad you found our forum. :D

It's nice to have people who really understand what we go through with this ornery disorder. Keep us posted on your progress.
