I am 31 years old, and have been having crazy symptoms the last few weeks. I get these dizzy spells, where I can't think, get a weird tight feeling around my middle, shaky, blurry vision, and very hungry/thirsty. When I feel like I can get up, I need to eat something right away, and then, get so tired, I usually fall asleep for a few minutes. 15 min later I feel much better. I just went to a nurse prac. and she did testing, that showed everything in the normal range, with blood sugar at 83 (after fasting thru the night). Can that still be low blood sugar, or diabetes? My symptoms are getting more frequent. The only thing she found was I was Vitamin D deficient. Thanks for any sugguestions......

Hi I'd recommend that you ask for test for Coeliac Disease. The first symtom I had was nausea, dizziness and extreme tiredness (sleeping for 12 hrs etc). Also low iron and low vit D are key indicators for coeliac disease. It's commonly linked to other autoimmune diseases ie type 2 diabetes, thyroid etc. Check out coeliac UK online and our GFG facebook page for tips. You need a blood test for Ttg and Iga or Igg. Good luck.

That is a good fasting number. You might want to get a cheap glucose meter at Walmart and start testing when you get these strange feelings. Keep testing and keep track and then show this to your doctor and let him order any further tests. Take care.

You may be in the early stages of insulin resistance. When you eat a carby meal your bgs spike very high. Your pancreas will then respond by making way too much insulin which hits you all at once . The speed of the crash may make you feel sick. Getting a bg meter at Walmart sounds like a good idea. Test 1 and 2 hours after meals and check out how high you are spiking. Many times fasting bgs are the last to spike in diabetics but you could still have a problem.

A few months later...

I last posted in November, and for about a month or so, I didn't have any symptoms, at least any that really bothered me. But now I have been having them quite often, and I am so tired all of the time. I was at the doctor, asking about mono or something that could be causing these symptoms, but she didn't give me a blood test. She just didn't have a whole lot for me :( When I was in before my fasting number was 83 which was normal. So I decided to get a home meter, so I could check for myself. I had a really bad episode on Saturday, my hands were shaking so bad, weak and blurry vision, along with dizziness.
My number this morning was 70 mg/dl. I couldn't test after breakfast because of a Dr. appointment for my son. I ate lunch and tested 1 and 2 hours after. They were 84 and 100, does that sound pretty normal? I know I need to check when I am having an episode, cause that is when I feel the worst! Thanks again for any advice you have! Andrea

70 is at the low end of normal, 84 and 100 are definitely in the normal range. Most of us if we go below 70 will treat it with 15 grams of carbs to raise us to 85-100. Most type 2's and non diabetics will not go too low because their livers will kick in some extra glucose to prevent this. What kind of diet are you eating? It could be some kind of reaction to wheat, dairy, etc.

There might be many things it could be with these symptom. Have you had a physical?
At first I thought you might have seizures like my daughter or MS like I do, but I figured it could be so many things.
With diabetes it is comforting to be able to take a BS test and see how you are doing.

I've had a lot of the symptoms you're having and don't have a diagnosis yet. I am 29 and was in good health until last November when I started getting vertigo, nausea, tremors, tingling and numbness, migraines, cognitive problems (confusion, trouble articulating) from time to time, irritability, muscle pain, etc. It all comes and goes (nothing constant, thank goodness) but is quite difficult to live with.

I can suggest some of the things I've been tested for in case you haven't considered them. Migraines and seizures can cause very strange problems - they mimic many other diseases. MS can also cause similar issues. Your doctor could do an EEG to check for seizures and an MRI to rule out MS and vascular problems in the brain.

Psychiatric disorders like anxiety and depression can cause these types of symptoms too. Also iron and B12 deficiency, and thyroid imbalances.

I have had a positive ANA test which means I probably have an autoimmune disease, but none of the specific antibodies were positive so it's wait-and-see which disease I actually have! So frustrating. It's an easy blood test so you could ask your doctor to add it to a diabetes screening test.

I would suggest a HbA1c and glucose tolerance test to check for diabetes rather than relying on the fasting test.

Hope you feel better and get answers soon!

I have the same symptom. Testing for glucose came back normal. I am wondering if you found any diagnosys for your illness.

From those numbers, it doesn't seem that you are diabetic or even pre-diabetic at all. You should probably continue to test blood sugar now and then to be sure but more importantly keep looking elsewhere for the source of your problems because it doesn't seem to be diabetes. There could be something else which needs to be addressed.

Just in case your hypoglycemic, try skipping a meal and keep testing every hour. If it continues downward and goes very low then that could be a factor. In that case, you will need to severely limit carbs (sugars and starches) and make sure to eat every few hours while awake.
