Hi,
The reason I had the OGTT was due to having low blood sugar on numerous random blood tests (pretty much every random blood glucose test, but never on fasting test). My blood sugar when low, would be anywhere between 2.5 and 3.5. On the latest random test, it showed up as 3 and I had eaten about an hour before, so my GP set up a 2 hour OGTT. Here are the results:
Fasting BG: 5.1 (Ref 3.3 - 5.5)
2 Hour BG: 3.7 (Ref range 3.4 - 7.5)
My GP was disappointed that we didn't catch it happening and that the results were normal and that I should follow up with my Endo. My appointment with him is not until late April, so I wanted to get some input from anybody here. It seems weird to me that my baseline would be close to the high range and then just after two hours, I am so close to being hypo again. I am guessing if I would of done a longer OGTT, it would have been low. I would like to see what happened at 1 hour, to see how high it went before such a sudden drop.
I was worried I may have a high BG, because I have had increased urination and thirst/hunger over the last year. I also have Celiac's disease and a family history of Diabetes, so I understand I have a risk factor. So that is a bit of a relief. Although my GP is concerned my random blood glucose dropping could be a precursor to diabetes later on, but my endo does not seem to be concerned since my numbers are not high...he does not care about low from what I see. I had a c-peptide/insulin test which showed both of them being out of range on the low side by quite a bit, with my BG of 5.
Insulin - fasting : 23 PMOL/L (Ref range 30-175)
C-PEPTIDE : 186 PMOL/L (Ref range 298-2350)
Fasting BG: 5 (ref range- 3-6)
Yet he was still not too concerned. I guess he is a specialist, they aren't really concerned until the diabetes does come.
Does anybody have any insight of this? Should I continue to have it checked or should I just assume this was a normal result and the random hypo results are just normal for people to have. FYI- I have symptoms on some of the hypo events, but on some occasions I do not.
Thanks for your help.
