OGTT Results - Questions

Hi,

The reason I had the OGTT was due to having low blood sugar on numerous random blood tests (pretty much every random blood glucose test, but never on fasting test). My blood sugar when low, would be anywhere between 2.5 and 3.5. On the latest random test, it showed up as 3 and I had eaten about an hour before, so my GP set up a 2 hour OGTT. Here are the results:

Fasting BG: 5.1 (Ref 3.3 - 5.5)
2 Hour BG: 3.7 (Ref range 3.4 - 7.5)

My GP was disappointed that we didn't catch it happening and that the results were normal and that I should follow up with my Endo. My appointment with him is not until late April, so I wanted to get some input from anybody here. It seems weird to me that my baseline would be close to the high range and then just after two hours, I am so close to being hypo again. I am guessing if I would of done a longer OGTT, it would have been low. I would like to see what happened at 1 hour, to see how high it went before such a sudden drop.

I was worried I may have a high BG, because I have had increased urination and thirst/hunger over the last year. I also have Celiac's disease and a family history of Diabetes, so I understand I have a risk factor. So that is a bit of a relief. Although my GP is concerned my random blood glucose dropping could be a precursor to diabetes later on, but my endo does not seem to be concerned since my numbers are not high...he does not care about low from what I see. I had a c-peptide/insulin test which showed both of them being out of range on the low side by quite a bit, with my BG of 5.

Insulin - fasting : 23 PMOL/L (Ref range 30-175)
C-PEPTIDE : 186 PMOL/L (Ref range 298-2350)
Fasting BG: 5 (ref range- 3-6)

Yet he was still not too concerned. I guess he is a specialist, they aren't really concerned until the diabetes does come.

Does anybody have any insight of this? Should I continue to have it checked or should I just assume this was a normal result and the random hypo results are just normal for people to have. FYI- I have symptoms on some of the hypo events, but on some occasions I do not.

Thanks for your help.

I wonder why they didn't test at the 1-hour interval of the OGTT? I've never had one, but I thought they tested more often that just at two hours.
The lab said the standard OGTT is just a fasting blood level and a level at 2hrs. I want the 5hr OGTT to see the full picture but my endo wont order it. He feels that reactive is no big deal...as long as I don't go high, he is not concered. I just don't want to ignore it. I have a pacemaker and celiac's disease at 23...I take nothing lightly anymore. I just want to make sure it is not just me worrying for nothing and I figured everyone here would know more about it.

Also because my OGTT numbers feel into normal range (barely), the GP ignored it and wished we caught something. I think we did...a high-normal fasting of 92 and then at only 2 hrs...a low normal of 67...I want to see 1 hr and 3hr...but my endo wont do the test. Oh well...wait until APril and see I guess.

Thanks again!
Or get a new endo . . . :noidea:

I agree, this is not something to ignore. You have enough medical issues that you're doubly careful now, and you should be. Sometimes you just have to dig in your heels & fight for it. I say this is the time to dig in your heels.
Thanks, I'm going to try my best too. The weird thing is, the ref range on the chart said my 3.7 was not low yet (close but not yet), but when I look at the ref range charts online it shows hypo.

I understand my GP doesn't know much about it, but she has told me my low blood glucose results could be a sign of diabetes later in life, but on this OGTT she did not seem to think 3.7 was too low. I guess she just follows the ref range.

Does anybody know if hypo is a precursor or if 3.7 is normal?

Thanks again.

3.7 isn't dangerously low, but it IS low in my opinion, and bears watching. I wouldn't want mine to be dropping any lower than that.

3.7 is in the hypo range. US 3.7 = 66. Do you test your blood sugar with a meter or are you just referencing to the OGTT results? Testing your fasting blood sugar will help you on a daily basis to see if you run low every day.
