My husband just started on an omnipod a few days ago, and we are extremely confused on why he can't take a correction dose when needed.

He woke up with a BG of 150, zero IOB, entered this into the bolus calculator with zero carbs to eat, his target BG is 100 and correction threshold of 100--and it would not offer him a correction bolus dose to take. Are we missing something? Is there a setting we need to tweak? Seems silly that you can't bolus a correction dose when needed if we have everything correct.

Waiting to hear back from his DBE, but she's on vacation and not readily available and omnipod support was no help, they just kept referring us to the user manual.

It has been a long time since I've used the OmniPod, but in the settings menu on the PDM - isn't there a place for a sensitivity factor or a correction factor? A correction factor is how many points 1 unit of insulin will reduce your blood sugar. If your husband's doctor has entered the settings, she may have wanted his blood sugars to be higher at the beginning of learning how to use a pump. Can you call the Doctor office tomorrow when someone should be able to give you an answer? We try not to give specific medical advice on the forum, but instead might be able to tell you "what worked for us."

It takes a while to get the settings right and every person on insulin is different. Try not to be discouraged at first. For me when I went on a pump it probably took a good month or more to get settings where the doctor wanted them. Even now I find that I need to adjust my settings every now and again.

Thanks, but it's not a correction factor issue.

His doctor does not determine his pump settings, we have done that with the DBE and run the update tests for those settings on a regular basis, as he was previously using another pump, the error is not in setup.

Was your husband able to do "corrections" prior to today or whenever he woke with a bg of 150? If he was, then I might begin to suspect that the PDM is not working correctly. I used the OmniPod for 3-1/2 years and I'm sad to say that on several occasions it became necessary to replace the PDM. If it was me, I would call Insulet again and hopefully this time you will get a different person. If they don't give you a satisfactory answer, ask to speak with a supervisor.

I'm using the Omnipod right now and it's a safety feature. If the BG result is between your target goals it won't correct. If it's above the target it will suggest a correction and you can increase that if you wish.
With his educator being on vacation, isn't there another educator that could help in his/her absence?
Failing that call Omnipod and ask to speak to a supervisor.

Does the correction feature work at all?

to check go to

"Home" - "Bolus" - enter up arrow till you get 200 for "current BG"
"use for bolus Calcs" Press "Yes"
"are you going to eat" press "No"
"Use these values for bolus calculations?" Press "Conferm"

it will give you the "Suggested bolus"

***BE SURE TO use the "Back" button to exit out so you dont get a bolus ***
