What is the difference between type 1 and type 2? Is the same test used to diagnois both? If so how is it determined whether a person is type 1 or type 2?
How are the symptoms different?
How is the treatment different?
Thanks

The difference between a Type 1 and a Type 2 is the bodies use of insulin. In Type 1s the body has quit producing insulin. In Type 2s the body is insulin resistent or simply does not produce enough insulin to counteract the carbs being eaten and converting them into energy.
As a result of this, all Type 1s need to take insulin were some Type 2s can manage their diabetes with simply diet and exercise. Some Type 2s need to take oral meds and some need to take insulin as well. The most important things to do for all diabetics is to eat right and exercise as this will help you to more effectively manage your diabetes.
The same tests can be used to determine diabetes but another test, c-peptide, is used to determine which Type a recently DX person is.
The symptoms can be the same and in some Type 2s symptoms ar enot even present.
I hope that answers all your questions and do not hesitate to ask more. Is there a particular reason you are inquiring?
Anybody that is more experienced than me with Type 2 can feel free to correct me.

Type 1 is an autoimmune disorder and type 2 is an insulin-resistance disorder. Besides the C-peptide Joshua mentioned, you can also be tested for GAD antibodies, the presence of which would indicate type 1 or 1.5 (LADA).

Primarily, type 1 diabetes is found in children and teens while type 2 diabetes id found in grown ups. Rest the above information is very good for reference.:D
Primarily or not, it's best to go by test results than age or weight. Even on this forum, we have a member who was diagnosed type 1 at the tender age of 52, and we have another member who was diagnosed type 2 at the ripe old age of 15.

This information, though generally accepted, is imprecise. I was 27 when diagnosed with Type 1. Better to go with the actual science. ;)

I was in my early twenties dx as type 1 as well. This age change is shifting and it is not a useful guide for dxing types anymore.
