Ok.. here goes... 56.. diagnosed with type 2 almost 2 years ago. Father passed away slowly from diabetes complications. At first I took control, changed to vegan diet and brought levels almost to normal. Now.. I am taking 100 units a day, eating just enough to function, and work out 4 times a week, and gaining weight. And every morning my blood sugar is over 250. Only thing my doctor, Kaiser Perm, will say is... it is progressive and she understand how frustrating it is. And to qualify to be considered for gastric bypass or lapband, I have to gain another 50 lbs. I am ready to ask her how long it will take to fix the problem if I take a full syringe every few minutes until I pass out. I am ready to give up if no one can or is willing to help me....

shoover, I hear your frustration. We are here to support you. Have you seen a dietician? Are you counting your carbs? Eating just enough to survive is not going to help your diabetes. Check the forums here that have loads of good, helpful information to help you in managing your diabetes.

I take 1 unit of fast acting insulin for every 6 carbs I eat. What is your carb ratio? Do you use both basal and bolus insulin? You seem to be a type 2 who is producing little or no insulin. You need basal/bolus control with carb counting. If you are not doing that then I can understand why you are having so much high blood sugar. I have a Type 2 friend who had this problem and he started using an insulin pump. The pump enabled him to have very good control. His A1c is now 5.3. He has also lost much weight. I also use a pump and it has helped me very much. You would probably need to see an endocrinologist (diabetes specialist) to be approved for pumping. A diabetes educator can teach you all about carb counting and appropriate insulin dosages in the meantime. Good luck!
