My daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 few months ago. She has been eating a 20 carb snack before going to bed and 2 unit of NPH (humlin N) to wake up between 7-6. Recently she has been wanting to eat more at bedtime (around 40 carbs: cereal and milk, or milk and cheese sandwich). we have dinner at 4 pm so by 8 she is getting hungry. I don't know what to do? i tried increasing her N, but she ended up being high for couple of hours until the NPH started to work and peak. should I mix her Humulin N with Humlog (fast acting). I appreicate your advice. This disease is overwhelming. she was doing well before, but recently I feel like I am chasing her numbers every few hours and starting to lose control and sense of how her body is reacting, and to top it all my little angle has been wanting to eat more. (she is a pretty active girl). any suggestion?

I dont know.anything about insulin but maybe try eating at 6pm instead? That may help a bit with the hunger.

Good luck.

I agree with PC76, but would like to add that 'carbs call for more carbs', so be sure she gets enough supper and if she feels she has to have a snack, make it cheese sticks or such, rather than carby cereal, milk or sandwich of any kind.

I know nothing about Type 1 or insulin, but as a type 2, I do know how food works in my body and carbs of any kind are going to make me hungry!

You must live in UK since children have their 'tea' at about 4 pm. That's just not late enough to carry them over to the next morning.

About your nickname, you can pray, but there really is no cure for diabetes! I concur with your wish, but fear it is genetic.

Good luck,

You didn't mention how old your daughter is, but her recent hunger and blood sugar changes may mean that she's growing. You can't do that without food, so as Patdart suggested, add some cheese or nuts and a little protein to help her feel satisfied.

The one thing that is constant with T1 is that you think you've got everything under control and wham! Some hormonal thing happens, or you get stressed, or the phase of the moon changes and your carefully crafted insulin regimen has to be adjusted again. If your daughter has a good pediatrician, or a helpful endocrinologist, discuss how you can make adjustments to her insulin as she goes through the very real and possibly rapid changes of childhood. You might also check out this site: children with DIABETES Online Community for help from other parents in the same boat as you.

Best,
Jen

A bigger snack can work but not cereal before bed, never cereal - even with milk. We do it on occasion but i know ill be up all night chasing numbers. Too many fast acting carbs. You need something that digests slowly. Ice cream, cheese, chocolate milk, peanut butter, beef, chicken, any meat. Stay away from the 'white stuff' before bed: cereal, bread, pasta, rice, and pizza. We don't even ave those things for dinner unless we can eat on the early side of 5:00 or 3-4 hours before bed. This has helped us greatly.
