When I was diagnosed with diabetes my fasting blood sugar was 126. I asked my doctor about being a borderline diabetic and he said that doctors no longer make the borderline diagnosis. What exactly is pre-diabetes? I thought you either are or are not diabetic.

I think there are docs who don't subscribe to the pre-diabetic diagnosis either. But there are such complicated combinations of tests sometimes, it must be hard to tell.

We (and the docs!) need to see several angles of it to get the picture, because fasting BG doesn't always tell the tale. A1c is a strong component, but not so good a gauge if the patient is having severe highs AND lows. The OGTT (oral glucose tolerance test) would seem like a decent indicator, but I really think all these tests need to be considered together, and then if there's doubt about type, the C-peptide and/or antibodies tests need to be done to (hopefully!) remove all doubt.
