Hello everyone,
I am 30 and fairly normal guy 5'4'' 140 LBS with no weight issues . However i was diagnosed with Gloucoma 2 years back and now recently my Bloodfasting level came at 6.9 which is very close to being diabetic. I am extremely worried .Although my doctor told me that i have nothing to worry about. However i know that i am not feeling well .I have problem with food i eat and have expeienced shaking in my body if i go long without eating.I often have problem with sleeping and urinate a lot these days. Since the news broke out I am trying to cut down on my cigrettes and also joined fitness club today .
I just want to know what are my chances to reverse this high sugar in my blood and any other suggestions.

Hello and welcome to our support group! While your numbers are not so bad it is the right time to try everything you can to give yourself even lower numbers. Tou might be able to avoid medications and insulin for a long time. Start testing your blood sugar. I suggest the Relion meter from Walmart. I am assuming there is a Walmart in Toronto. The relion and the testing strips are very reasonably priced. Test before breakfast and two hours after a meal each day. Try various foods to see eaise your blood sugar the least. I suggest that you avoid all cereals, white bread, rice, pasta, and potatoes for the time being. Have some protein with each meal. Raw vegetables and fruit are good choices.

I eat 130g of carbs each day and I exercise every day. Exercise will help reduce blood sugar when needed. There are so many suggestions I could make, but this is a start. Look at the Glycemic Index site posted near the top in the Diabetes Diet and Nutrition forum.

Let us know what test results you get if you start testing at home. In the meantime, ask all the questions you want.

Is it possible to go back to Non Diabetic status just by diet & Exercise ?
Why would my Doctor say that I have nothing to worry about?

Welcome to our forum, apa. It is sometimes possible to control high blood sugars with only diet and exercise, at least for awhile. But we never go back to being non-diabetic. This condition is for keeps, so what we do is manage it.

Managing may mean diet & exercise, it may mean adding some meds and/or insulin to the diet & exercise. This is all good, and none is any better or worse than the others. They are all splendid tools which we have at our disposal to keep our blood sugars at safe levels.

Your doctor may be trying to reassure you that diabetes is not a death sentence. Many times our primary care physicians are not as well-versed in diabetes management. It doesn't mean he's a bad doc, it just means diabetes is a very complicated condition, and the patient is the one who needs to take the reins and find what works for himself. There is just no single right answer or treatment for all of us.

So use this as a wakeup call and begin to learn everything about managing it. As Richard says - get a meter and test regularly. I use the ReliOn meter myself, and it's a fine little meter. Get a carb counter book too, and begin to weed out the high fast-acting carbs from your diet.

I know you can do this. You've caught it early and it's good to be properly concerned - you don't have to be extremely worried. Try to relax if you can . . . :)

take care and keep us posted,

I think i had my blood level up for the last 8 months but was not detected . I had a discharge back in July and thought it was an std and had all the tests done including Prostate etc but everything was fine.
My main symtpms were frequent urination and hunger in the morning .There were only few times that i felt my body shaking in the afternoon only when i had not eaten anything .I never had to wake up at night to urinate However for last three days i have been waking up in the middle of night not sure if it is due to bloood sugar or my tension of the sitaution .I just tend to handle this kind of sitation badly .
I do feel good these after eating oranges .It has been my fav fruit since ages . Shoul I keep eating it or stop it for now ?

I have another question regarding the exercise .I eat my lunch at 12 and usually a fruit in the afternoon as snack and then go to Gym straight at 6 pm without eating anything else .However i do not feel anything unless i do some heavy lifting .I actually feel better and more pumped up after regular exercise .Should i realy be taking anything before exercise ?
2nd question is regarding bringing the level down . Is it realistic to think it will not come down with exercise & diet but can only be maintained at this range ?

Are you testing before, during and after your exercise? I think you should. The numbers would help you decide how to deal with various aspects of your session. You need enough carbs to get started, you may need more just before pumping iron. Test again after pumping iron since that is an exercise that could make you go low. If it made you go high then you needed more carbs before starting.

I had pain in my elbows more than 10 years ago. It was much more than slight pain. It was bad. My neurologist used an EMG test and found ulnar nerve damage. Minor surgery corrected the problem. It could be mild arthritis too.

I can't identify with the smell problem unless you are talking about a fruity smell, like diabetics can have if they have been experiencing a lot of hihg blood sugar. If that is the problem then it would be especially noticable in your urine.

Yes ,I had strong odor in urine for few days but it kind of died down by itself slowly .Nowadays i only feel this smell like it surrounded my brain and it is coming from inside .
What about rash like skin and need to scratch ? Is this aslo a sysmptom of diabetic?

I have researched "diabetic itch" on Google. There are some sites that suggest diabetes can cause itching. I also have an allergy and dryness of skin that cause itching. Itching can be caused by many things, it is not always our diabetes.

The numbers here for Canada follow a different kind of scale than in the US. I don't know how to convert them to the US equivalent numbers. I'm sorry I cannot comment. Your doctor should go over your report with you and comment on each result.

The one number you posted that I understand is the 6.9, which converts to 124 in mg/dl. That is not extremely high, but it is high enough to warrant intervention.

edit: (I have since found a conversion tool & your cholesterol & triglicerides are also slightly elevated, although still within what passes for normal range in a patient who is not diabetic. Diabetes adds a new level of risk to the medical equation)

If your doctor continues to reject any ideas of addressing this, then yes, I would suggest getting a second opinion. An endocrinologist (diabetes specialist) would be a good choice.

When you've caught it this early, there is just no justification for letting it go until it gets worse. You are young and strong and can fit this into your lifestyle right now without incurring an greater complications. You are in charge here, so don't let your doctor blow it off.

This past week I went to Gym daily with no smoking and good reduction in Carbs .In addition to that I have also started taking showers with cold water in the morning as it just make me more active where as taking shower with warm/hot water had little or no effect to make me fresh in the morning .I am feeling slightly better like when I wake in the morning ,I am less tired but I guess I have a long way to go .
I did wake up during nighttime to urinate many times this past week (not sure if it is sign of it getting worse or me under too much stress as I never had to wake in the middle of the night before untill I heard the news.

Get your meter as soon as you can and start testing - it's the only way you can know where you are and what to do next in treating it.

It's good to hear you're feeling better, and you have my total respect for quitting smoking.
You're going to get a handle on this and live a long healthy life! :)
Keep us posted!

I had my A1bc level checked today anf it came out at .059 with ref range 0.040 & 0.060 .
However my Fasting level was 8.0 and after 2 hrs was 7 .
My Doctor is confused himself and cant make a final decision and says that tests was not good . However based on A1bc he mentioned that it is perfectly normal range.
I just checked my level in the afternoon when i had my meal at 12 and a small snack at 4 and checcked the sugar at 7pm and it came at 4.8 .
I am have been having extreme problems in sleeping at night these days .
Any help on this board .

If your doctor is confused at the test results, then he shouldn't be averse to referring you to a diabetes specialist - an endocrinologist. See what you can work out . . . an endo might be able to spot something your regular doc doesn't see. There really IS something going on here, and it's important to figure it out.

hang in there until you get some answers.

Those numbers are all great except for fasting. It is surprising to see the fasting be that large, given that all other numbers were so good. It would be interesting for you to do tests for the next three mornings and telling us the results. Of course you cannot eat anything beforehand and you should wahs and dry your hands before testing. I am thinking that the fasting you reported might not be what your fasting is on a normal morning.
